A 46-year-old Ypsilanti Township man accused of sexually assaulting two girls younger than 13 in Washtenaw County also faces a sexual assault charge in Wayne County.

Clinton Leath faces charges in Wayne County, including third-degree criminal sexual conduct, an official at the Washtenaw County Jail said today.

Romulus Police Department Sgt. Derran Shelby said Romulus police received a complaint from child protective services about July 2010 regarding alleged sexual abuse, and the complaint was investigated and handed over to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, Shelby said.

The prosecutor's office issued a warrant for Leath in October, Shelby said.

Shelby wouldn't say how many victims there were in the Wayne County case or their ages, but said there were multiple minor victims.

In Washtenaw County, Leath faces charges of first-degree criminal sexual conduct against a person younger than 13, a felony offense carrying a maximum penalty of life in prison; two counts of second-degree criminal sexual conduct against a person younger than 13, a felony offense carrying a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison; and one count of second-degree criminal sexual conduct assault against a person younger than 13, a felony offense carrying a maximum penalty of 5 years in prison, according to court records.

Those alleged crimes occurred from January 2000 to June 2010 in Washtenaw County, according to court records.

Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office spokesman Derrick Jackson declined to comment on the case.

Leath, also known as Clinton Francois, is being held at the Washtenaw County Jail on a $150,000 cash surety bond. He is to appear back in court for a preliminary hearing March 23, according to court records.

The Michigan Public Sex Offender Registry shows Leath was convicted in 1993 in Washtenaw County of third-degree criminal sexual conduct and registered as a sex offender in 1995.

A female victim testified during a preliminary hearing in the case in 1993 that Leath raped her at her Ann Arbor home, according to court records. Court records show Leath was sentenced on Sept. 3, 1993 to four to 15 years in prison.
