Police were dispatched at 9:58 a.m. Monday to the BP station at 4975 Washtenaw Ave. for a report of a person wearing a mask and holding a shotgun. The suspect fled in a vehicle as officers arrived at the scene of the robbery.

A witness notified investigators that the suspect pulled into a location off of Golfside Road and a search began. The K-9 unit shared by the Ypsilanti Police Department and Pittsfield Township Police Department was called in.

An officer eventually found the man and took him into custody. The investigation has been turned over to the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office for potential charges.

It’s the second robbery at a Washtenaw Avenue BP station in the past three days. The Ann Arbor Police Department is investigating a similar incident on Saturday when a man robbed the BP station at 3720 Washtenaw Ave. with a long gun, according to police.

Both incidents were along Washtenaw Avenue and involved men in ski masks using guns to rob the gas station. It’s unknown at this time whether the incidents are related.

Great job by the witness! Let's hope some goofy judge doesn't want to slap the alleged perp. on the wrist, IF he's found guilty!

K-9 police are impressive. You are not going to outrun / outmaneuver them. Negotiation time is over once they're sent out.

Are you serious?

Guess I'm going to have to "Re-Imagine Washtenaw" in a different light after these robberies. I will have to be extra careful on deciding what gas stations to stop at.

Here's a story that Katrease Stafford wrote in December about the police dog collaboration: http://www.annarbor.com/news/ypsilanti/pittsfield-township-ypsilanti-enter-agreement-to-share-k-9-unit-resources/

Arth, I don't. Dog food is expensive. Ask anyone living on a pension...

Awesome. Now if convicted this better be years of actual prison time. Not some 6 monthes and out garbage.

OK, I'm dropping the charges against the OP (as did the moderators). You said the magic word "if".

Dear Basic Bob: Please read the conditional text of my comment before convicting me. Thanks!

Basic Bob, The original poster did say "if convicted." Nicholas, The sentencing guidelines in Michigan for armed robbery are 4-15 years. Upon an armed robbery conviction, a person would receive a minimum four year sentence, plus potentially 2 additional years on top if the person used a gun during the commission of a felony.

it might be a good idea to wait until charges are filed and a suspect is convicted before we discuss sentencing guidelines.

Ypsilanti and Pittsfield share a dog? Does the dog think it belongs to an Ypsi cop, or a Pittsfield cop? I mean, it's not shift work.

To save time and money police officials share resources to save time and money. This includes police dogs. So, no matter where the animal comes from this dog is doing a job that will save on resources. Go get em tiger!!!

It's called cooperation between two police agencies. I believe the dog probably just does what it is trained to do and couldn't care less what police department the officer works for.
