Updated with final team standings.

The Saline High School natatorium was a fitting final stop for this week’s Washtenaw Interclub Swim Conference championships and the traveling junket of SUVs, shammies, swimcaps, Nintendo DSs and Gatorade bottles that accompanied it.

After all, it is the Hornets -- the winner of four state swimming championships in the last three years -- that have benefited the most from the area farm system that is WISC, which wrapped up Thursday with Huron Valley Swim Club winning its 37th consecutive team title.

The quantity and quality of participants in this week’s championships -- a number comfortably in the thousands -- represents the bright future of area swimming at numerous high schools.

That future is embodied by competitors like 12-year-old David Merz from Ann Arbor Country Club, who set three WISC championships records Thursday and finished first in another relay.

Merz set records in the 50 freestyle (24.09), 50 breaststroke (30.76) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:48.15) that he anchored, with teammates Ben Daugherty, Alex Janosi and Andy Dolen.

Merz’s record-breaking breaststroke swim was extra special because he broke the 10-year-old mark set by his coach, Kirk Kumbier.

“It’s pretty cool” said Merz.

Merz’s mother, Julie, was quick to add that Kumbier has been “great and very supportive of David, even when he knew his record could get broken.”

Complete results from Thursday's 11-12 age group swimming and 9-10 diving competitions are listed below, as are the first three days of 51st annual summer event. Check out AnnArbor.com's photo slideshow from Thursday's action here.

Hmm lost the seconf half of my comment which was: Huge thanks to all the WISC board volunteers who work so hard every year behind the scenes to make this happen. The amount of work they do before they even get to the point of asking clubs for meet worker volunteers is incredible. Also thanks to all those who worked at the meets in the sweltering heat to make sure every swimmer and diver got to where they needed to be safely and ready to perform.

Great job, swimmers!

Parents.... there are many spelling errors in WISC results. Some of them originate because the WISC volunteers cannot read the coaches' handwritten entries, some of them are typos from the teams when they submit entries electonically. . Once they are in the system, that's how they stay. AA.com generally get their spellings from the official results. Still upset? No-one (except the meet officials) is paid to make this happen. What did you do to make it happen? Give birth?

I just want to go on record that I was not, in any way, pointing out anything other than a spelling error. I was not attributing the error to annarbor.com, WISC, anyone who volunteered for WISC, and the coaches or volunteers for any of the teams that participated in the event. In addition, I am not the parent or any relation to the person whose name was mispelled in the report and therefore had nothing to do with their birth. I was not "upset" about the misspelling of a child's name, but just thought it appropriate to make the correction. Really Swimmer. I weep for a society that cannot accept that people make errors and that when those errors are brought to light, we cannot accept them for what they are: errors that stand corrected.

These people were simply clarifying the spelling of their names. Their tone was respectful. It is perfectly acceptable to correct spelling errors in news reports, and no one sounded upset.

Congratulations to all the swimmers. I'd like to point out two spelling errors. The Ann Arbor Country Club swimmer pictured is David Merz, and his mother, also quoted in the article, is Julie Merz.

Congratulations to the hundreds of swimmers that participated in the Championships! And a special congratulations to Sophia Kunisaki (not Runisaki) representing Barton Hills for her win in the 8 and under 25M Breaststroke!

I think that the team scores you are reporting are without dive scores... please could you post results with those scores included?
