Michigan State will wear special uniforms when it faces Michigan on Oct. 15.

Ready for some gold (or is that bronze?) and green?

A look at the helmet Michigan State players will wear Oct. 15 against Michigan.

Nike

The Michigan State football team will sport special Nike-designed uniforms with gold and green helmets, shoes and jerseys when it plays host to Michigan on Oct. 15 at Spartan Stadium.

Nike unveiled the look on its Facebook page today.

The official Michigan State athletics site also has images of the uniform. The Spartans are one of nine teams that will wear a version of what Nike is calling its "Pro Combat system of dress."

The back collar of the uniform will have the words "Molon Labe," which the MSU site says is "the Spartans' defiant challenge to the competition to 'come and get them.'"

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!! What a tribute to big brother...get some "gold" in there....that's one way to say, "we suck". Hayden Frye at Iowa did that when he re-did the Hawk-eye's uniforms. I think his quote was, "At least we're going to look good!". That said, he did at least stick with the school colors. I don't really get the "bronze". Isn't that the 3rd place medal? Aren't there only two teams usually playing in a football game? ....Good for you. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!

We have our own traditions, why do we really care to comment on their unis? The negative comments make us look: Petty Insecure Jealous We're far better than that. What really matters is what we do on the field in East Lansing. Let's Go Blue!

They look great but someone should have thought it through. Head cheerleading coach to Coach Dantonio: "The squad likes the new football uniforms coach, except for one problem. When they say 'Go Green, Go White', they'll be cheering for the NY Jets."

I noticed for the gloves to have the desired effect, they have to be held up together in front of the player as in a "please don't hurt me!" pose. So these "please don't hurt me" is the spartans new theme. Let's make that come true, Blue. Beat up on little brother.

I actually like them. They remind me of the Ninja Turtles ("turtles in a half shell - ninja power"). On the other hand, why mess with the Green and White traditional colors? These colors belong to Wayne State University!

LOL @ MSU's UofM obsession Special uniforms for the game? That's great. What next, a countdown clock? Just another B1G game for Blue. Is it really a rivalry when you might be the 4th biggest game on UofM's schedule?

First, change the shade of green to mold colored. Then change white to gold. Yup, Sparty is so proud of her traditions. still hunting for an identity....

"White or Gold, they are still little sister" I thought the phase was "little brother" and, of course, it is meant to be demeaning. Is changing it to "little sister" intended to make it more denigrating? If so, it sounds as if someone is in need of some re-education…

Go Green, Go Gold? What the eff? This looks like a Huron High School football jersey. Whatever...it won't matter what they're wearing when they are hanging their heads in the shame of their loss to the almighty U of M! GO BLUE!

OK...I've become an MSU anti-fan lately but these MSU unis are AWESOME!!!!!!!! WOW! I will say there's a reason Michigan isn't wearing anything special for this game! #littlebrother. We used to actually root for MSU before they started acting like we were their main rival. Start a Rivalry with Wisconsin or something. We already have two major rivals!

RustyShackleford

Tue, Sep 13, 2011 : 5:30 p.m.

The uniforms are pretty cool looking. You said that you used to root for MSU until they started acting like UM was their main rival. As an MSU fan I'm wondering who our main rival actually is. Please let me know.

Tue, Sep 13, 2011 : 4:42 p.m.

With the new Big 10(12) divisions, it'll be hard to build up any long-lasting rivalry that's meaningful (except the money-maker UM-OSU). How do you make a tradition out of once every 3 or 4 years match-ups? It was bad enough when it was just the 10 teams and no one ever got to play everyone - now it's worse.

I'm in the "whatever" and "I don't care" category. Let's just beat up on Sparty, no matter what they are wearing. Go Blue !

Leave it to Sparty to come up some kind of attention grabbers. OK, it is actually a Nike idea. Bronze, gold, whatever, all of this is getting ridiculous. A novel idea is to forgo the "Special" unis and just get back to the game itself.

Tue, Sep 13, 2011 : 3:50 p.m.

Wow. What on earth are they thinking??? Is MSU's Green and White not as beloved to them as our Maize and Blue is to us? Will the Spartan fans now be chanting "Go Green, Go Gold!" ?? And can you even imagine the riot that would ensue if Michigan unveiled a uniform with some color other than maize and blue (or white for road games)??

heartbreakM

Tue, Sep 13, 2011 : 3:50 p.m.

This just in: Wisconsin unveiled its new Yellow and Purple uniforms for its throwback day to be scheduled in 3 weeks. When asked, former AD Barry Alvarez said from a secret island in the Caribbean, "It was just time for us to show our fans the traditional Wisconsin look that we have waited for, while embracing the future". Interestingly, the Wisconsin uniforms will include no shoulder pads, and Alvarez added, "with all the cheese that is served in the cafeterias, we are bulking up our players the natural way".

From what I have read, even the sparty fans don't like the uni.. One would think that msu would be concentrating on the game in hand, and going into South Bend, which I'm sure will be a hornets nest, and the Irish need a win here to righten the ship . I think sparty is going to have a hard time trying to slow down Mike Floyd, whom I believe is a first round NFL pick, he's big, strong and fast with great hands.. What happened to the green & white ? GO MAIZE AND BLUE...

Once again your poll author misses the point completely: MSU's colors are Green and White. ND wears Green and Gold uniforms on special occasions -- are they trying to look like alternative Domers (as in "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em?)

In the link you supplied, which was very interesting, it says that MSU wore black and gold for 12 of 13 years under coach Bachman - 1934-1947. It also says that in 1947, freshman coach Biggie Munn brought back the green and white for his first game against UM - which he lost 50-0.

Its bronze, not gold, might have to with the Spartans that fought in the Bronze age, or perhaps being the third best footballl school in the state, similar to the ordering for Olympic medals

You all should read MSU's press statement, which is very eye opening. First, it claims that MSU had "winged helmets" before UM did (a la Crisler). Is this true? And second, it points out that Dantonio got a Nike-paid junket to Hawaii. I don't like the sounds of that, particularly in light of the scandals erupting all over, the limits being placed on physicians accepting even lunch from a pharm rep, and the players supposedly getting "exploited". Nothing like sleeping with your sponsor to blur amateur sports from paid advertising (I know, I know, it's blurred already). But most importantly, MSU's statement claims that there is no real tradition in MSU costume, er uh, uniform design. This uniform is horrible. Doesn't even stay true to the "green and white". Bronze? Black? Enough with the changes. Let's get to tradition. And go blue. Link to MSU statement: http://www.msuspartans.com/sports/m-footbl/spec-rel/091311aac.html

MSU did use the winged helmet before UM, so did Ohio State and several other teams. UM gets points for sticking with it though, it is their signature nowadays. The article does say that the uniforms have been tweaked a lot in MSU's history and that in and of itself is a tradition. Tradition doesn't necessarily just mean never changing something. A tradition could be wearing a newly designed uniform for one game every year. It is a special one time uniform so what if it isn't just green and white. MSU did use gold and black helmets a long time ago so it does tie to the past. By the way it doesn't look like Notre Dame's alternate uniforms that they occasionally wear. ND doesn't use black, they use a much lighter green and they have gold helmets. The helmets for they special uniforms is bronze with a big green strip and Spartan logo. Thanks to the poster for at least getting the color right. GO GREEN!

MSU can't stick to anything including a winning tradition. So what if they used some sort of "winged helmet" -- they couldn't continue with it and couldn't support it with WINNING.

"First, it claims that MSU had "winged helmets" before UM did (a la Crisler). Is this true?" the link below suggests it may be true. Somewhere it even says some version of the "wing" was a stock Spalding design. http://www.spartanjerseys.com/michigan-state-football-jersey-helmet/winged-helmet/

I'll vote for you Craig. Listen, Michigan owned MSU for years. No MSU owns Michigan. We went through our John L Smiths of coaches. It's OK, just accept it. Michigan will be back, there close. Give it time, but just stop hiding behind you wins over EMU and WMU and calling your self winners.
