Michigan QB Denard Robinson named to 5th national watch list, this one for Golden Arm Award
The hype continues to roll in for star Michigan football quarterback Denard Robinson.
The senior is widely considered a top-five preseason candidate for the Heisman Trophy, and now has been named to a fifth national preseason award watch list. This one is the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award, which goes to the nation's top quarterback.
Robinson also has been tabbed for the the Walter Camp Award (player of the year), Maxwell Award (most outstanding player) and Davey O'Brien Award (best quarterback) and Manning Award (best quarterback).
Lon Horwedel | AnnArbor.com
No Michigan quarterback has won the Golden Arm Award, which went last year to Stanford's Andrew Luck.
Robinson is among 29 players named to the watch list for this season's honor, including three Big Ten quarterbacks. Illinois' Nathan Scheelhaase and Iowa's James Vandenberg were the others.
Robinson led the Big Ten last year in total offense at 257.6 yards per game, and was fifth in rushing at 90.5 yards per game.
He is expected to be even better next year -- especially in the passing game -- now that he's in his third season as the starter, and his second operating coordinator Al Borges' spread-West Coast scheme.

TO SEC LSU FAN In an article by Kyle Meinke, dateline 6/13/12 "The University of Michigan graduates its athletes at a better rate than all but two Big Ten schools, Northwestern and Penn State. In all but three sports, "the graduation rate meets or exfceeds that of the general student body", thats 23 of 26 sports. Coach Hoke is actively pushing his players to graduate, going so far at to attend classes to personally check on attendance. Any bump in Michigan football numbers is due to transfers and that is down drastically and pre- Hoke.

I know the articles on this site and by Mr. Meinke. They tend to obscure facts by hiding them in other data. Like I outlined in a post on this article that Mr. Meinke or AA.com decided to delete. What you say above might be true...but you blend all athletes. The topic of discussion was football. You add in your tennis, volleyball, field hockey, etc. players and the graduation rate of athletes tend to increase. The new criteria cited by Mr. Drage was the NCAA standards for football. The standard is the Academic Progress Rate (APR). Specifically, it is a 4 year average rate that a school must maintain in EACH sport for that sport to be eligible for post season play. Currently, for football, that number is 900, but will climb to 930. Drage commented that SEC schools don't have quality students as football players and questioned whether SEC schools would still be able to compete after the new standards go ito effect. He also stated that the big 10 and um had such a great standard. THe APR numbers tend to disagree with his statements and actually show where um truly stands! per your quote above, which 3 sports do you think um athletes trail the general student body? Swimming? Tennis? LaCrosse?

ooohhhh....@Drage...I am SOOOOO glad you brought this one up! so, as of last year (2011). Every SEC school meets the new NCAA standards. (I assume we're just talking football...don't know about the rest). Now, for the interesting trivia. If the new standards had been in effect in 2010...poor old um (with a score of 928) wouldn't have been allowed to lose in the Gator Bowl! Mississippi State (whose score was 952) would have had to play some other loser big 10 team. Also, as of 2011, apparently only ONE big10 team has a lower APR than um! Oh yeah....um has some really high standards. Quite pathetic really.

@Blu. Technically the APR is strictly academics. The scholarship athlete must be academically eligible and stay in school to achieve points. It be interesting if you could provide some backup for your statement that the biggest impact to um's APR score is coaching changes and transfers? The point of my post was in response to a comment by Drage (comments were subsequently deleted). Drage queried what impact the upcoming changes to the NCAA standards would have on SEC schools' ability to field competitive teams and that the big10 and um had so much higher standards than the SEC. I think the data shows his statement is quite inaccurate. and it really points out just how poorly um football players match up to SEC football players, both athletically and academically! Poor old um is at the bottom of both conferences academically! And yes all big10 schools would also meet the new standard. You should have been able to conclude that by my statement that only 1 (Minnesota at 932) big10 team had a lower APR than um...

OH SEC LSU Fan, you realize that this isn't based only on academics right? Michigan's coaching changes, with the subsequent player transfers had the biggest impact on the scoring over the last several years. It's also why the NCAA standards were grandfathered in. "Every SEC school meets the new NCAA standards". Are there any BT schools that don't meet those standards or is this more of your WAG statements? I'll bet you don't know. That BS at LSU is justly earned. TiM Go Blue!

Annually, every memory of pre-seaon watch lists evaporates forever near the end of November. Sic transit pre-season watch lists. ;-) Denard: Just git 'er done. Great Glory will follow. Go Blue!!

They really need to re-name this award. Or re-evaluate the conditions for candidacy.

Robinson is a less than mediocre QB who can run. His so-called Heisman candidacy will end on Sept 1, 2012. Did anybody watch the PATHETIC PERFORMANCE vs. VaTech? MSU?

Depends how Borgess uses him. Read option and he has a good game. If Borgess stobornly tries to force him into the I-Formation Michigan will get destoted and won't score more than 3 points.

Denard's junior season passing stats: 20 TDs, 15 INTs, 2173 yds, 139.7 eff rating. Tom Brady's junior season passing stats: 15 TDs, 12 INTs, 2636 yds, 131.7 eff rating. Of the 3 leading passers in Michigan history (Brady, Henne, Navarre), only 3 of their combined 12 seasons saw passer efficiency ratings above Denard's 139.7 last year, and NONE of them ever had a season with a rating as high as Denard's Sophomore tally of 149.6. Get over it.

What is the point of a watch list? If someone who is not on the watch list outperforms all the players on the watch list, is he ineligible to win the award? No. So the watch list concept itself is irrelevant. Sportswriters should report the stories, not seek to become the stories. These days, they seem to spend more time voting on their personal glory than getting out there and reporting stories.

What it looks like - to a Spartan fan - oft varies from the reality. And Mean Old Mr. Reality says Sparty is about due to return to back seat mediocrity. Five in a row? That would be exceptional - and just because Spartans have five fingers on each hand doesn't mean the number five has any greater significance. Congrats on counting that high. But don't let it go to your head. ;-)

How many awards for best quarterback/best player/MVP are really necessary?? I've got to admit, I've heard of next to none of these, with the one exception being the Heisman.

Perhaps I've heard of them, but I guess I've just let it all pass me by. The Heisman is the only award I've ever kept track of, and the rest of these strike me as fluff. Maybe this is a whole new realm of NCAA football I should consider and give another chance. But still, how many "Best Quarterback" awards are needed?
