Michigan football's switch to a 3-3-5 leaves a lot of questions

By AnnArbor.com Staff

After the Michigan football team had three defensive coordinators in three seasons, it seemed like the biggest thing the unit had going for it entering spring football was consistency - defensive coordinator Greg Robinson returned for a second year.

But the Wolverines are adapting again.

Obi Ezeh and the rest of Michigan's defenders will implement a 3-3-5 defense this spring.

The team will use more of a 3-3-5 defense this fall, AnnArbor.com's Dave Birkett reports. The defensive changes leave mgoblog.com's Brian Cook with a lot of legitimate questions about the scheme and the personnel that will run it.

Among them:

  • Does this mean Craig Roh is more of an outside linebacker?
  • Does Mike Martin fit well at defensive end?
  • What happened to the 4-2-5 Michigan tried to implement last year?
Here's the link to Cook's complete breakdown of what the 3-3-5 means for Michigan at mgoblog.com.

@ sean "My guess is they'll switch up the scheme according to the opponent" When has RR ever shown you he has the ability to adjust? he doesnt adjust his own system to his players strengths, he doesnt adjust schemes at half time, and he doesnt adjust his team depending on down and distance. RR is unable to adjust to anything.

There are two teams that currently have used the 3-3-5 defense and the have fared pretty well. Boise State and TCU but they do play in smaller conferences. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

3-3-5 defense is effective in spread-base leagues because it has more speed on the field. The problem is when you play larger power teams the 3-3-5 doesn't hold up well by the 4th quarter. My guess is they'll switch up the scheme according to the opponent. The pre-season assessment is the defense is more horrible than last year. (My assessment)

"3 Seasons 3 Lawsuits 5 Victories?" Well played. If this is "just one of the defenses" they are going to use what's the big deal? Defenses change formations every gaem to suit the situation.

Cook has some good points... particularly the 3-3-5 was somewhat effective last year against OSU's running I-formation... but really it is just one of our defense layouts, I still trust RR and Robinson to know when to use it, and I am confident in them. Didn't we just discuss this yesterday?..... it could be a looooong summer! UM - 78 Reports of 3-3-5 defense - 0
