Despite uncertainty, Rich Rodriguez excited about 2011 Michigan football team's recruiting class
Angela J. Cesere | AnnArbor.com
Uncertainty surrounding his job status aside, Rich Rodriguez has an optimistic outlook for 2011.
Michigan’s football coach initially planned to sign a class of 16 to 18 prospects, but said he now anticipates the number will be as high as 20. Although NCAA rules prohibit him from commenting on specific recruits, he said he’s pleased with the way the class is taking shape.
“We feel very good about our recruiting class,” he said Saturday. “Our coaches have done a real good job recruiting so far.”
Two to four players may enroll early and start classes Jan. 5, and be eligible to participate in spring practice.
In past years, Rodriguez has enrolled as many as eight commitment early, but said that an early start date for college classes, coupled with more recruits that won’t finish their semesters until late January has decreased the number.
“It’s a fluid situation,” he said.
The same could be said for his entire class. He’s added multiple verbal commitments in the past week, most recently cornerback Blake Countess from Maryland. But Rodriguez said Saturday that, like any year, he won’t breathe easy until Signing Day.
“You don’t know until the first Wednesday in February what your class is going to entail, and you don’t know for a year or two how that class is going to turn out,” he said. “Every coach is going to tell you they have a great recruiting class, but look at it a year or two down the road.”

EMU scored 14 more points against Ohio State under former defensive coordinator Ron English then Michigan did. Enough said on Michigan's third year of the Spread Offense. Further, MIchigan's Defense prior to RR coming was never broken.

azwolverine - good stuff; "the cupboard was bare" is a sham and a typical RR excuse. rensational - I believe you are right, the discussion is probably pointless, because no matter how many facts are brought up and no matter how bad RR's record at UM has been, and no matter how many NCAA violations there were and/or will be, and no matter how bad it will get under RR here, the RR supporters are not going to change their minds. And they will not listen to reason. And they will somehow dismiss the facts or try to spin them. And that's ok, everyone in entitled to their own opinion. Keep supporting RR - that's your right. But come on folks, stop trying to blame LC and everyone else. That is very weak. If Bo had a 3-9 season or a 5-7 season he would be the 1st person to kick his own butt, for letting down the team, the university, and the fans. And stop calling other people who have a different opinion than you a "hater".

UM will keep RR for another year and here's why- WVU has done it right again, at least as far as prepping for a new coach. Although I'm not fond of what they are doing to Bill Stewart, they at least are easing in a new coach for similar reasons that RR will see an end to his UM career. He's not getting it done. So, your DB knows this, and he will keep RR for the 2011 season. After which, Bill Stewart, another WVU coach, will be free to take over the head coaching job at UM. How fortunate for UM that WVU can keep supplying coaches. Now, in all seriousness, DB is doing a disservice to UM by withholding his decision, or indecision, concerning RR. If he is to let RR go after the bowl game, by announcing it prior to the game, he should announce it, as recruits can plan their futures a little better. If he is to keep RR regardless of the bowl game, recruitment will be more certain again, as recruits can decide before the game whether they want to play for UM and RR or elsewhere (less of the waiting game). If DB is withholding his decision until after the bowl game, doesn't sound like he's really high on RR in the first place. How much more wishy-washy can DB be? Does a bowl game really make a difference in how UM has played over the past 3 years? To be honest, a bowl game is just one more game being played outside of your conference. It's not like it's going to be a factor in national rankings. A win will show you can play teams on the same level as the current UM team. A loss will show they still can't. Beating 5 teams of inferior quality at the beginning of the season does not mean they are a solid 7 win team.

Not getting into the "why RR should stay"/"why RR should go" stuff...I mean, I have no clue why a lot of people here haven't figured out that's a pointless "discussion." What I will say, though, is I don't know where some of these people are getting this "RR haters" stuff from. Most of these comments against RR RETURNING are not attacking his character. I see a bunch of recruiting talk, a bit about the offense not working against the better Big Ten teams and some about the defense being horrible. I see, what, one "Rich Fraud" comment...? After all these posts on AnnArbor.com over the past year, if some of you people still don't understand that wanting RR gone generally is nothing personal, then that really just adds to my point that these "discussions" are pointless because you're not paying attention. And even if there is hatred at all...um...I think it's kind of normal to dislike a coach who is perceived as not getting it done, especially at a program like Michigan. I mean, really...did you want all of us to go down on the field, hold hands with him and his staff and sing Kumbaya or "You Raise Me Up"? Forget Duke basketball--this is football...and if programs like Maryland and West Virginia are--let's get real--going to fire coaches who just won 8, 9, maybe even 10 games this season and at WVU in large because the fans were unhappy, then how do you think/expect a program like Michigan is going to react? Well...let me stop. I know I'm typing to the wall here.

There are many arguments made in RR's defense, most of them subjective (non-fact based), that run contrary to each other. First, we hear that the cupboard was bare when RR got here. What is that argument based on? Mallet, Arrington, Manningham, Schilling, Brown, Minor, Matthews, and Boren were all here. There were also other O linemen who were going to be 5th year seniors. Many of them left, but they were certainly here when Carr left. On the defense, 7 starters, including Brandon Graham and a ferocious defensive line were coming back. Our recruiting rankings were also always high, so the fact that people argue that the cupboard was bare is not only a cop-out, it is wrong. The cupboard was stocked. Again, many left and many, especially defensively, regressed. Another argument is that when a coach changes systems, there's going to be growing pains. This one, imo, holds far more water and, if anyone looks at RR's past history, is a trend everywhere he's been. So to blame a trend that is common in RR's past on Michigan's lack of talent (especially when talent was here) is not looking at the facts. Again, talent is subjective and is the responsibility of coaches to improve on. Past trends in a coaches history are not subjective, they are objective fact. What many RR supporters also don't seem to recognize is that what RR has done in his first three years at UM is fairly typical in RR's 18 year head-coaching history. The three 10+ win seasons to conclude his tenure at WVU were actually atypical. RR's record over the years is as follows: Salem 2-8 Glenville St 1-7-1 4-5-1 6-4 10-3 8-3 8-2 6-4 WVU 3-9 9-4 8-5 8-4 11-1 11-2 10-1 (lost to Pitt when had chance to play for NC) UM 3-9 5-7 7-5 Those records are the objective, fact based history of RR's 18 years as a head coach. You will notice that even at Glenville St, after seven years there, his team won 6 games. After winning nine games at WVU, he went back down to 8 wins for two straight years. I don't hate RR. I simply look at what he has done and I'm not convinced that he will ever outcoach Jim Tressel or compete for Big Ten titles. He's been a mediocre to good coach for most of his career, with some flashes of greatness, but never the consistency needed to take and keep a program like Michigan at the top. That is my firm belief based on the facts. By the way, John...to say that Bo wouldn't have done better in 2008 is not only HIGHLY subjective, it's insulting. UM lost to a 3-9 Toledo team. While this is opinion, I'm quite sure Bo would have found a way to pound it down their throats and beaten them. In fact, I believe Pioneer High would have beaten them. Again, that part is subjective.

Why do you think RichRod couldn't have prevented the defections? That's a rather foolish statement. How many defections to do you think Coach Muschamps will have at Florida? He's bringing in a new system, but I bet he has little to no defections, at least of players HE WANTS to keep. Players that he doesn't will probably leave, much like players that RichRod didn't want transferred. When or when does this guy get held accountable by his (dwindling) fans? "You lift me up!"

It's LC's fault for the terrible D and special teams. It's probably LC's fault for the NCAA violations at UM? And also at WVU too? That's weak.

Gee, Mission, why aren't you bragging about Lloyd's 2005 class, rated #2 in the country behind Tennessee? This class of highly rated prospects should have been seniors for RichRod... How many of these "studs" developed or ever earned starting roles under Lloyd? Half of this class was gone before RR's first snap of 2008. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2005/football/ncaa/scout.top25/ "Michigan Wolverines HEAD OF THE CLASS: RB Kevin Grady (5), DL Marques Slocum (5) NEWBERG'S ANALYSIS: Michigan's class, like Tennessee's, is loaded just about everywhere. It starts with Grady (East Grand Rapids, Mich.), one of the nation's top RBs. Grady is the ideal Big Ten back -- big, strong and powerful. He should compliment Michael Hart very well. QB Jason Forcier (San Diego, Calif.) is one of the West Coast's best and he will certainly have some weapons at WR with the commitments of Mario Manningham (Warren, Ohio), Antonio Bass (Jackson, Mich.) and Laterryal Savoy (Mamou, La.). This is a terrific trio. In the trenches, the Wolverines did very well, especially on the offensive side of the ball. Four of their OL prospects are in Scout.com's top 20 at the position: Justin Schifano (Webster, N.Y.), Cory Zirbel (Murray, Ky.), David Moosman (Libertyville, Ill.) and Tim McAvoy (Bloomington, Ill.). The maize and blue received a commitment from one of the top big athletes in the country, Slocum (Philadelphia, Pa.), who was impressive on both sides of the ball during the U.S. Army All-American Bowl week. Slocum will play DT in Ann Arbor. Michigan also added top-notch DLs James McKinney (Louisville, Ky.) and Eugene Germany (Pomona, Calif.) on Signing Day." And it's fun to say that Lloyd's team in 2007 was good, but that has nothing to do with the roster the next year. Do you remember who graduated/left early without able replacements ready? On offense, it was Henne, Hart, Manningham, Arrington, Long, Kraus, and Mitchell. What stayed behind(after other Carr defections that RR couldn't have prevented), was a team without a QB, led by injury-riddled RBs (Minor, Brown) and a swiss cheese offensive line. Bo could not have done better with that roster.

John "you forgot *Worst roster ever inherited by a Michigan coach"... In 1994 Gary Moeller's last team was 8-4 and 5-3 in the BT. LC took over in 1995 and his 1st team was 9-4 and 5-3 in the BT. In LC's last year we were 9-4 and 6-2 in the BT. In RR's 1st year we were 3-9 (worst season ever) and 2-6 in the BT. Plus LC's 2007 recruiting class was rated by Rivals at # 12 and the LC/RR class of 2008 was rated at # 10. You'll have to do better than that... another comment made without the facts to back it up.

John, no I am not the one who brought up this year's supposed "top 10" recruiting class, you did. I am "drawing my line in the fact sand" (whatever that means) by these facts, which show RR's PERFORMANCE as HC (although some of it could indicate his character too): *16-21 overall, 6-18 BT record in 3 years *worst season EVER in UM history *our D has gone from 27th to 110th in the nation *worst defense EVER at UM *the best O rating in 3 years under RR was 22nd in the nation *0-3 vs OSU, MSU, and PSU *1-2 vs Wiscy *0-2 vs Iowa *NCAA violations while RR is HC *pending NCAA violations at WVU when RR was there *0 BCS bowls in 3 years; 1 bowl in 3 years These are not items being twisted because of "hate" or "character attacks"... these are the facts of RR's performance and some of his actions. Argue all you want, call people "haters" all you want, but none of the above things are going to change because they have already happened. His record is what it is.

Until national signing day in Feb, these verbal pledges don't mean much. Michigan is on track to have a top 10 class this year, including player of the year candidate, Dee Hart, who will get his fifth star in the final rankings. I just checked again and Michigan now has the 9th best recruting class by average player ranking (3.46) according to Scout. So sticking to the facts right now as they are, RichRod is recruiting "better" players than LSU, Nebraska, Florida State, Stanford, Miami, Georgia, Clemson, Oregon, Tennessee, and others... Anyone that is not spouting character assassination (RR) and is honest would debate the pros and cons and yes we've all been somewhat disappointed but I've also been very well entertained by some real good pluses this year. Living in Ca. since 1973 I to was very disappointed by all the Rose Bowl games I paid a fortune to attend and watch us lose. Bottom line here is the people that are fair and make sense are describing an honest scenario of present and future another words boys and girls in my book anyone that attacks a persons character relentlessly without pointing out the positive aspects is just spewing hatred that is pointless and harmful to the whole program. John "... click on it to sort by "average stars." Bingo! Michigan is currently ranked #13 when you sort by player rating. Their low overall score is due to having only 14 recruits presently, since many schools above them have 20+ recruits now. And Michigan will sign a total of 19-20 players and is leading for a couple stud 4-star talents (Frost, Zettel), so Michigan's recruiting class will finish in the top ten." First off, you are assuming that the next 5 or 6 recruits they sign will be rated the same as the others... why don't you just stick with the facts as they are right now and not daydream something up that hasn't happened yet. Right now RR's 2011 class is not rated very well, period. Saying "well this could happen, or that could happen" sounds nice, but please just stick to the facts as they are. Plus you are making an even bigger assumption that RR will be able to coach these recruits to their peak performance level - something he obviously has not done while at UM. This is the same logic that RR supporters use to say that we will definitely win at least 9 games next year, since we've gone from 3 to 5 to 7 wins... so 9 must be next. Seriously? Let's keep going with this... then our offense should be rated # 1 in the country next year, because we were # 22 this year. And our defense should be rated in the top 10 in the country next year, because we've probably hit our lowest point and now things will start getting better. And RR will probably not get caught with the NCAA violations at WVU when he was there, because he didn't get caught for his UM violations. And our special teams will be in the top 3 in the country next year, because RR will try harder from now on... Come on folks, seriously?

The UM O is rated 22nd in the country at 34.3 Pts/game - 22nd in the country is the "premier" spead offense in the country? Look closer and you'll see other spread O's rated ahead of RR's. Also, our O was 9th in the BT for Red Zone efficiency, LAST in the BT in turnover margin, only 6th in the BT in penalties (many O penalties), and 6th in the BT in 4th down conversions... how is this "premier"? The only thing RR has proven that he is a coach who is 16-21 overall and 6-18 in the BT, at one of the premier universities in the country. He has proven how he can take a 27th rated defense and turn it into a 110th rated defense in 3 short years. He has proven how he can make a joke out of our special teams. He has proven that he knows how to violate NCAA rules and that he can lie about afterwards. These are the things he has proven he can do.

Robert, Are you honestly happy with the defensive "overhaul?" This is the most pathetic defensive stretch in Michigan's long, storied history. It's not only bad by Michigan standards, it's bad by Western Michigan standards. As for the offensive overhaul, ask OSU and MSU how great RR's spread is. UM scored 24 points combined against our arch rivals this year, and is averaging 8 points per game against OSU since RR's arrival. Two wins against Illinois and Purdue don't sugar coat the fact that we stink against the Big Ten's top teams (and the bottom teams, which we barely beat). If beating Minnesota and Northwestern equates to further progress next year, then by all means RR is your man. If you want UM to beat MSU and OSU...need a new coach.

Didn't he end last season with something like only 67 scholarship players of the allowed 85? Does it make any sense for him to say anything other than "it's crititcal for the future of Michigan football that we land 25 top recruits every single year." Some of you are missing the point. It's coaching. The Michigan coaching staff has NOT "coached up" enough players to play winning football in the Big Ten. RR was hired to HEAD COACH the Michigan football team to play winning football, not just the offense. That failure ALONE is enough to warrant his dismissal. Then you add $1.5-2.0 million to defend him and the University on NCAA charges,(which you pled guilty to 4 out of 5 before the hearing), only to find out he did it before at WV. AND, he was warned about it in writing even then! That's also a fireable offense. "Anyone who does the same thing over and over again, and expect different results, could be classified insane." I don't think DB fits that description.

dtones, Says who? I've already watched this stellar offense put up diddly-squat against a handful of the conference opponents. Backing RR is more of the "One Man Offense", disaster of a defense and more true freshmen starting. I've always thought most coaches will need 4 years but I'm done with all of the excuses. I think Brady Hoke is pretty decent, maybe not my first or second pick but I think he can get the job done. RR is not the premiere spread coach in this country, he can't even maintain balance within the spread offense that he uses. And any coach that admits that he doesn't pay attention to defense isn't a good coach at all. There's no diversity, no balance, just a 1 trick pony! That's the only thing that is proven.

You dont know until the first Wednesday in February what your class is going to entail, and you dont know for a year or two how that class is going to turn out, he (RR) said. Guess what, RR. You aren't going to know after January 3rd what the next UM recruiting class is going to look like, because you will be on your way out of town. For good. And good riddance. Don't let the door hit ya on the way out!

Sean T., Brady Hoke is not a better option than Rich Rod. Rich Rod is the premier spread offense coach in the country. He has proven this. So if you aren't going to go back to old style Michigan football, then you stay with Rich Rodriguez.

DB should have fired RR 2 minutes after the OSU game ended and certainly after he made a fool of UM with his banquet dance

It won't matter for you Rich cause you will not be Michigan's coach after The Gator Bowl, hope you have some plans for Two Men and a Truck. I wonder if Rich is gonna cry when David Brandon fires him. Good Bye Rich Fraud. GO BLUE!

If we're going to keep this guy, DB should just say so. If we get crushed against MSU in the bowl game and he's fired then there goes "spread" recruits that we wasted. This may put the next coach behind except if DB's pick is Brady Hoke!
