Quarterback Charlie Batch headlines Eastern Michigan Hall of Fame class

By AnnArbor.com Staff

Charlie Batch is no stranger to Eastern Michigan's football record books.

He finished his collegiate career in 1997 holding virtually every passing mark before parlaying his abilities to the NFL. Since then, Batch has spent the past 12 years in the league, helping guide the Pittsburgh Steelers to Super Bowl XL in Detroit in 2006.

Batch's accomplishments will be recognized this weekend when he will join six other Eastern Michigan athletes in the school's latest Hall of Fame Class.

This year’s class will mark the 34th anniversary of the E-Club Athletic Hall of Fame. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. followed immediately by a buffet luncheon. The class will then be honored at halftime of Eastern Michigan's men's basketball game against Northern Illinois in the Convocation Center at 2 p.m.

"It’s a special honor,” Batch said in a story on the Pittsburgh Steelers' website. "By no means did I ever envision this happening. It was really great, I loved going to Eastern Michigan. There were a lot of people there, but it was very close. I enjoyed the people there, the faculty who took me in being from out of state, five hours from home. They embraced me and brought me in to be a part of the family.

"I made a lot of good friends throughout the process. It is great to represent Eastern Michigan in the NFL."

During his Eastern Michigan career, Batch earned four varsity letters. During his career, he set school records for total offensive yards (7,715), single-season offensive yards (3,229) in 1995 before breaking his own record his senior year (3,390).

He also left Ypsilanti holding the record for career passing yards (7,592) and career touchdown passes (53). He earned the program's Most Valuable Player award in 1997 and was a first-team All Mid-American Conference selection in 1995.

Batch was drafted by the Detroit Lions in 1998 with the 30th overall selection and started for four seasons with the Lions. During his career, Batch has played in 71 games, completing 819-of-1,461 attempts for 10,050 yards and 57 touchdowns. IN 2006, he earned the Pittsburgh Steelers' Walter Payton Man of the Year award.

Batch created the Best of the Batch Foundation for youth in disadvantaged communities in the Pittsburgh area and has also established Project C.H.U.C.K, which stands for Continuously Helping Uplift Community Kids and is in the 10th year of hosting a youth basketball league in his hometown of Homestead, Pa.

This year's Hall of Fame class also in includes Denise Allen (women's basketball), Jerry Cerulla (men's track), Angela (Springer) Johnson (women's track), Sharon McNie (women's gymnastics), Gary Patton (football) and Gary Strickland (athletic trainer).

Tickets for the Hall of Fame ceremony and luncheon, which also includes a ticket for the EMU-NIU basket ball game, are $45 each and can be purchased by calling the Eastern Michigan Athletic Department at (734) 487-1866.
