For seven innings Thursday night, Jalen Bouma was nearly untouchable. The only problem was, the opposing pitcher was that - and more.

Bouma did everything he could to give Huron High School's baseball team a chance against No. 9-ranked Temperance Bedford, throwing a complete-game three-hitter.

But Bedford ace Trent Szkutnik went a step further, throwing a no-hitter in a 2-0 Kicking Mules victory that paved the way for Bedford's Southeastern Conference Red Division sweep. The Kicking Mules' offense only got stronger in the nightcap, producing 10 runs in the fifth and sixth innings as part of a 12-1 win.

After failing to touch Szkutnik in the opener, Huron (10-12, 4-4 SEC) managed only two hits - both in the first inning - in the second game, finding it difficult to generate much offense against Bedford pitching.

"It's a little disappointing. I thought we'd swing the bats a little better in the second game," Huron coach Terry Bigham said. "If we would have swung the bats on them early on, it may have been a different story."

Huron generated only two runners in the opener, putting a man in scoring position in its first at-bat before Anthony Hugan reached on an error in the sixth. But Szkutnik, who struck out four as part of his masterpiece, promptly picked Hugan off before retiring the four remaining hitters he faced.

Bouma mastered most of Bedford's lineup, but was unable to figure out Jared Kujawa, who collected all three of the Kicking Mules' hits, including a solo home run.

He proved to just be getting started.

"I did my best to keep him off-balance," said Bouma, who struck out three and walked only one. "He had all three of their hits, but coach called a great game and I had a great defense behind me."

Unfortunately for Huron's defense, there was little the River Rats could do against what Bedford's offense came up with in their sweep-clinching victory. The Kicking Mules connected on four home runs in the runaway win - including two by Kujawa.

Even with the power surge, Bedford led only 2-0 before breaking the game open in the fifth inning with six runs. Bedford used a pair of home runs in the fifth and sixth inning to take command.

Huron's only run came in the first inning, when Bouma delivered an RBI single, driving in Ryan Nikishear, who reached on an error. The River Rats also made a couple of base-running blunders, keeping them from adding to their offensive output before Bedford pitching shut them down.

"They took advantage of our mistakes, which good teams will do," Bigham said. "They're the best team we've seen this far and we knew we had to play a great game. Unfortunately, that second game, we didn't." Jeff Arnold covers sports for AnnArbor.com and can be reached at (734) 623-2554 or by email at jeffarnold@annarbor.com.
