Skyline swimmer Ashleigh Shanley and Washtenaw Christian soccer player Brian Stout

This week's Athletes to Know features Skyline swimmer Ashleigh Shanley and Washtenaw Christian Academy soccer player Brian Stout.

Ashleigh Shanley

Ashleigh Shanley

School: Skyline.

Class: Junior.

Sport: Swimming.

Accomplishment: Shanley has qualified for the Division 1 state championships in the 200-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke. Shanley was all-state in both events when Skyline competed in Division 2 last year. Skyline is 5-0 in dual meets so far this year and took third at the Huron Relays.

Favorite athlete: U.S. National Team member Natalie Coughlin.

Favorite music: Taylor Swift, Black Eyed Peas and Lady Gaga.

After high school: "I want to swim in college, that's my main goal,'' Shanley says.

Favorite Michigan Wolverine: "I kinda love Vincent Smith. He's a neat little guy," Shanley says.

Coach Maureen Isaac says: "Ashleigh's work ethic is second to none. She is an outstanding student and a great kid."


Brian Stout

Brian Stout

School: Washtenaw Christian Academy.

Class: Sophomore.

Sport: Soccer.

Accomplishment: Stout recently tallied three goals and three assists in Washtenaw Christian's 6-1 victory over Blissfield. Stout has 10 goals and 13 assists so far this season for the 4-6-3 Wildcats.

Favorite athlete: German national team striker Lukas Podolski. "My grandparents are from Germany and I've followed Podolski for a while," Stout says.

Favorite music: Red, Breaking Benjamin and Rise Against.

After high school: Stout would like to study sports science or sports management and play college soccer.

Favorite Michigan Wolverine: "Gotta go with Denard (Robinson)," says Stout.

Coach James Hughes says: "Brian is a really hard worker for us and is mature for a sophomore."
