For starters, Skyline was sans its lone setter, Hannah Christman, who was out with an illness. If that wasn’t enough, the Eagles were short three more players for the opening set - three Eagles who were in a four-car fender bender on the way to Ypsilanti, delaying their arrival.
So, the Eagles (14-18-4, 3-6 SEC) started the quad with just six players - a worried six.
“Everybody was just kind of shook up. It really took us I don’t know if we really settled down,” said Skyline coach Janet Hinz, who noted that the three delayed players arrived unscathed five minutes into action.
“The first game - playing with only six players - everybody was going crazy,” said Skyline’s Katie Austin, who had a team-high 24 kills and three aces.
Nevertheless, Skyline settled in and won both its SEC matches, topping Lincoln 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 26-24) and Ypsilanti 3-1 (25-19, 23-25, 25-15, 26-24).
