Huron's A.J. Mathew and Central Academy's Sami Shalabi lead local All-State basketball selections
Huron High School senior guard A.J. Mathew and Central Academy senior center/forward Sami Shalabi received “special mention” honors on their respective Associated Press All-State boys basketball teams.
Mathew received the honor in Class A, the AP announced today. His River Rats teammate, Dante Williams, was joined on the Class A honorable mention list by Pioneer senior James Kelly and Ypsilanti junior Tristan Simmons.
Shalabi was a special mention Class D honoree. Special mentions received two or more votes from the 10-member media panel.
Mathew, an honorable mention selection last year, averaged 13 points, 3.1 assists, 4.2 rebounds and one steal for Huron during the regular season.
The 6-foot-3, four-year starting point guard led the Southeastern Conference Red Division-champion River Rats to a 21-2 record and their third consecutive district title. He finished his career with a 3:1 assists-to-turnover ratio and is the third Huron player to score more than 1,000 career points. Mathew will play at Toledo next year.
Shalabi averaged 21.6 points and more than 10 rebounds for Central Academy and led the Flacons to their first-ever district championship. The 6-5 center/forward had 43 consecutive double-doubles, dating back to his sophomore year, and also averaged just under six assists and five blocks per game.
Williams, a 6-6 guard, averaged 9.6 points, 1.5 assists, 4.9 rebounds and 1.2 steals for Huron. He will continue his career at Oakland University.
Kelly, a 6-7 center, averaged 16 points, 10 rebounds, three blocks and 2.5 steals with a 58-percent field goal percentage for Pioneer and will attend Eastern Arizona College.
Simmons, a 6-4 guard and the lone underclassmen of the Washtenaw County honorees, averaged 18.8 points and more than six rebounds for Ypsilanti, which went 22-2 and won district and SEC White titles.
