Eight fouls. Seven turnovers. Zero field goals.
It was about as bad of a start imaginable for the Huron High School girls basketball team, as it trailed 20-4 to Bloomfield Hills Marian after the first quarter.
Huron, however, methodically turned the table.
The River Rats flexed a full-court press that eventually wore down the Mustangs, and hit a wave of 3-point shots in the second half -- when Huron erupted for 40 points -- on their way to a 55-48 comeback victory Tuesday at Huron’s Riverdome.
“I think we grew a lot tonight in terms of coming back and understanding that you can come back,” said Huron coach Steve Vinson. “It’s a long game. (You have to) understand that you can come back from a big deficit. I think they matured a lot.”
After Huron’s woeful first quarter, when starting post player Kelcy Barott was forced to sit after two fouls in the first two minutes, Vinson told his team to take a collective breath.
“I think we came out with a lot of jitters, really nervous,” said Vinson. “And we finally settled down.”
Bianca Williams -- whose four free throws accounted for Huron’s only first-quarter points -- penciled in the Rats’ first field goal with a runner in the opening minute of the second quarter.
