Former Belleville High School, Eastern Michigan coach Bob LaPointe dies

Former Eastern Michigan assistant coach and longtime Belleville High School football Bob LaPointe died Tuesday. He was 66.

LaPointe coached at several high schools, concluding his career with a 17-year run at Belleville.

He was an assistant football coach for Eastern Michigan from 1978-82, and served as the interim head coach for eight games in 1982. The highlight of that eight-game run: LaPointe led Eastern to a 9-7 victory against Kent State on Nov. 6, 1982, ending a 27-game losing streak.

LaPointe also was known for coaching the Class B state champion Dearborn Divine Child team in 1975.

Visitation will be held Thursday, Feb 2, from 4-9 p.m. and Friday, Feb. 3, from 3-9 p.m. at Vermeulen Funeral Home (46401 W Ann Arbor Rd) in Plymouth, Mich. A funeral service will be held Saturday, Feb. 4, at 10 a.m. at Ward Presbyterian Church (40000 Six Mile Road) in Northville, Mich.
