Father Gabriel Richard baseball puts on hitting display in 16-1, three-inning quarterfinal win over Schoolcraft
BATTLE CREEK -- Eighteen plate appearances. Ten hits. Thirteen runs.
And that's after only one inning of offense was in the books for the Father Gabriel Richard High School baseball team in its Division 3 state quarterfinal game against Schoolcraft
The Fighting Irish tacked on three more runs in the third inning, wrapping up a mercy rule-shortened, 16-1 victory over the Eagles Tuesday evening at Bailey Park in Battle Creek.

It was an offensive eruption that even left Gabriel Richard coach Greg Lenhoff wide-eyed. And he's seen his Irish team score 13 first-inning runs once before, against Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes on April 27.
But never like this.
"I'm not sure -- in the 25 years of coaching (at any level) -- I've ever seen 10 line-shot singles, doubles and triples in the first inning," said Lenhoff, in his second year as head coach. "They hit the ball like that all year, but to put it together like that in one inning is pretty amazing."
The top-ranked Irish (40-1) will bring their hot bats right back to Battle Creek for Friday's noon semifinal against Catholic High School League rival Madison Heights Bishop Foley.
After Gabriel Richard leadoff hitter Dennis Olszewksi drew a walk to lead off the bottom of the first inning, Tuesday's hitting display began. Conor Dishman knocked a single and Nolan Breymaier followed suit, driving in Olszewksi to tie the ballgame at 1-1.
"We just saw the ball really well today and were focused on hitting," said Breymaier, who finished with three RBIs. "We came out sharp, came out mentally strong and we just executed what we practiced."
On the heels of Breymaier's game-tying hit, Chris Ostrowski drove in the go-ahead run with a standup double. Donnie Eaton followed with a two-run single, pushing the Irish in front 4-1.
The Fighting Irish continued peppering hits around the C.O. Brown Stadium field until they had batted around their lineup. Twice.
"This morning we all felt great," said Wagner, who finished with a game-high four RBIs. "I knew we'd come out here and play well. We all hit the way I thought we we're going to from the beginning and all the way through the end. It was really good to see.
"Once Dennis (Olszewski) starts it off for us, it's contagious and we just hit all day..."
Schoolcraft, which went through three pitchers in the inning, eventually put an end to Richard's onslaught when Joey Birchler popped up to first base for the third out. When the dust settled, the Fighting Irish held a 13-1 lead.
"One kid hits after another after another," said Lenhoff. "That's one of the hard things about this lineup. They can wear a good pitcher down after awhile. There are really no breaks in the lineup."
After uncharacteristically clustering three straight outs in the second inning, Gabriel Richard forced the game to a mercy-rule halt in the third. The Irish strung together three more hits and reached on an error without an out on the board, scoring three runs on a two-run triple by Wagner and an RBI, game-ending single by Mattie DeDoes to round out the 16-1 tally.
Gabriel Richard was no slouch on the mound either. In fact, its pitchers teamed up for a no-hitter.
Starter Ostrowski threw two innings, allowing two walks and an earned run while striking out three. Justin Goike pitched the third, retiring the Eagles in order.
The Irish, meanwhile, finished with 13 hits on the day.
"We hit every ball hard," said Lenhoff. "There wasn't an easy out today. They were all over the ball. It's pretty impressive the way they hit."
Gabriel Richard is quite familiar with its semifinal opponent. They are 3-0 this season against Bishop Foley, which beat Memphis 11-1 in a Tuesday quarterfinal. The Irish swept a regular season doubleheader (11-6 and 11-2) in late April and won 1-0 in a nine-inning Catholic League C-D Division championship game on May 26.
