Huron soccer player Drew Shepherd and Lincoln swimmer Taylor Hanes
This week's Athletes to Know features Huron soccer player Drew Shepherd and Lincoln swimmer Taylor Hanes.
Grade: Junior.
Sport: Soccer.
Accomplishment: The junior goaltender has only surrendered two goals in his last four matches, including a 2-0 shutout win over Dexter and a scoreless tie with cross-town rival Skyline. Shepherd was a Division 1 second team all-state selection as a sophomore.
Favorite music: Rap, dubstep, almost anything but country.
Favorite class: History, specifically U.S. history.
Future plans: “The dream would be to go to Denver University,” Shepherd said. “I grew up out there, I love being near the mountains.”
Other sports: Shepherd would love to play lacrosse, but his schedule doesn’t allow for it. He also loves to ski -- on the mountains and in the water.
Coach Reese Richardson says: “His consistency has been a staple for us for a long time. He brings a certain level of intensity that keeps us focused.”
Grade: Junior.
Sport: Swimming.
Accomplishment: Hanes was named a team captain this year and at the Railsplitters' first meet of the year -- the Southern Michigan Independent Swim League relays -- participated in four relays for her team, including the fourth-place 600-meter freestyle relay.
Why she loves swimming: "I've always liked swimming. I'm not coordinated, so as it got harder in high school, it pushed me," she said. Hanes also plays doubles for the Railsplitters tennis team.
Favorite movie: Transformers series. “I think it’s really cool, it gives you a big imagination and I like the action scenes.”
Favorite music: Aerosmith, Queen, REO Speedwagon and Journey.
Favorite class: Math.
Coach Adam Cook says: “She’s dropped a ton of time. Taylor leads by example in the pool and in practice. She’s everything a coach could want.”
