By Matt Durr

Former Pioneer High School standout Emy Guttman, is making a difference already for the Michigan field hockey team. After eight games, Guttman leads the team in scoring and has received Big Ten Freshmen of the Week honors twice.

“I’ve scored the goals, but everyone else has set me up,” said Guttman who didn’t believe it when she heard she won the award for the second time.

Teammate and former Huron High School player Ainsley McCallister didn’t let the accolade go unnoticed.

“I made sure to let her know right away,” McCallister said, joking.

Although Guttman has played well through the first eight games with seven goals and one assist, she says it hasn’t been easy.

“It’s a big difference, more of a time commitment. Everything is faster,” Guttman said.

Guttman and her teammates open the Big Ten season this weekend when they travel to rival Ohio State on Friday. The Wolverines are No. 11 in the nation with a record of 6-2.

EMU runner is MAC’s best again
Eastern Michigan junior cross country runner Terefe Ejigu was named the MAC’s Runner of the Week after finishing with a first-place time of 24 minutes, 23 seconds in 8,000-meter race last week at the Spartan Invite in East Lansing.

Ejigu won the award earlier this season after he finished with the top time at Toledo Rocket Open in early September.

Kopmeyer Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week
After making seven saves in a 1-0 victory for the U-M women’s soccer team, Haley Kopmeyer was named Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week. The former Lahser High School goalie has recorded four clean sheets on the season and leads the Big Ten in saves, save percentage, shutouts and saves per game.

Donhoff second on career digs list
Michigan volleyball libero Sloane Donhoff has moved past Megan Bower for second place all-time in career digs at Michigan. Donhoff surpassed Bower’s 1,467 digs Friday against Toledo in the Wolverines' 3-1 victory.

“I couldn’t do it without my teammates,” Donhoff said. “It’s been a lot of work, but it’s been fun work, finding something to work on each day.” Donhoff added that she never cared about individual records, she just want to leave her mark on the program.

Head coach Mark Rosen said Donhoff is one of the few true liberos in volleyball and is someone other teams have to prepare for.

“She’s developed into an elite libero. She can change the game,” Rosen said.

The No. 18 Wolverines now turn their attention to the Big Ten season as they travel to Indiana on Friday before facing No. 13 Purdue on the road Saturday.
