Saline resident Spencer Slade is one stroke off the lead after the first round of the 101st Michigan Amateur Championship.

Slade, 22, shot a 3-under-par 67 Monday on the North Course at Oakland Hills Country Club. Brian Hayward of Grand Rapids leads the 189-player field.

“I hit all the fairways and had good looks into every green,” Slade said. “It was a boring, solid day."

Ann Arbor's Casey Baker is in 14th place after shooting a 1-over 71.

A trio of Saline residents are close behind: Matt Paterini (72), Mike Ignasiak (73) and Phil Gieseker (73).

Slade played in his first Michigan Amateur last year, but did not qualify for match play. After two rounds of stroke play, the top 64 players compete in a match play tournament.

Round two begins at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday.
