Ann Arbor-native Grace Luczak, a 2007 graduate of Pioneer High School and an upcoming junior at Stanford University, was named to the U.S. women’s national rowing team on Monday. Luczak is one of four Stanford oarswomen who earned a spot on Team USA.

“It’s amazing to be able to represent your country,” said Luczak, who earlier this summer was named to the Under-23 U.S. team. “This is definitely very exciting.”

Luczak credits the national nods to her first years rowing in Ann Arbor.

“All my roots are in Ann Arbor,” Luczak said. “And all the thanks go to getting started in the rowing community in Ann Arbor.”

On July 26, Luczak helped the U-23 U.S. team orchestrate a silver medal time of 6 minutes, 21.80 seconds at the 2009 World Rowing U-23 Championships in Racice, Czech Republic. The former Pioneer rower added a fifth place in the women’s pair race, along with teammate Mary Jeghers, clocking in at 7:29.37.

Luczak and the U.S. national team travel to Poznan, Poland, for the World Rowing Championships, which begin on Aug. 23.

Congratulations to Grace! On to the Olympics in a few years hopefully. This story is a good example of someone who got their start rowing on Argo Pond, which is in danger of going away if Argo Dam is removed. Hopefully, City Council will vote to keep the dam so that rowing can continue on Argo.
