Dario Franchitti leaves the pit area after making his final pit stop of the race on his way to winning the Indianapolis 500 on Sunday.

Dario Franchitti won a strange Indianapolis 500, Indianapolis Star columnist Bob Kravitz says.

Kravitz writes: "This was a fuel race, a strange race, an alternately thrilling and mundane race. There were pit-stop follies, tires falling off cars (oops) and a fuel hose still affixed to Will Power's ride. There were crashes, the worst being the late smash-up that somehow left driver Mike Conway with nothing more than a busted-up leg. (It is a miracle of engineering that he wasn't injured terribly, or, heaven forbid, worse.) And there was fuel strategy, which isn't necessarily thrilling unless you're into green living and the concept of fuel conservation.

Franchitti, who left Indy-car racing three years ago, returned Sunday to win his second Indy 500 in four years, the Indianapolis Star reported.
