AAU basketball team makes national semifinals and more community notes

The Michigan Gators, a 7th-grade AAU boys basketball team made up of mostly local athletes, reached the semifinals of the AAU National Championships July 14 in Hampton, Va.

The Gators, playing in the East Coast Division 3 bracket, finished in third place out of 76 teams, going 7-1 for the tournament. The team is made up of the following players: Kyren Bolden, Brandon Wade, LJ Dewolf, Anthony Crump, Jack Ammerman, Darius Hall, Ryan Wade, Jamison Hicks and Vincent Williams. It is coached by Skyline girls basketball coach Keith Wade.

Saline 3-on-3 soccer

Saline High School will host the 2nd Annual 3-on-3 Soccer Classic Saturday, Aug. 3. Teams have until July 31 to register for the event at wc3v3.com

Age divisions for the tournament include U-7 to U-14 boys and girls and an open women's over 30 division.

New 5K open for registration

Registration is now open for the inaugural Raise Hope and Foster Dreams 5K, to be held Sept. 28. Racers will begin at 9 a.m. at Rolling Hills County Park in Ypsilanti Township. The first 200 participants will receive shirts, and the first 100 will receive gift bags. The event, sponsored by the Washtenaw County Foster Care Coalition, supports local foster children and their families.

Just curious...what is AAU? It would be helpful in sports stories if abbreviations and acronyms were defined once near the start of an article. Most of your readers may know what you are writing about, but not all, and, specifically, not me. Thanks.
