The view of the water from the Olympic village and Team USA gear are just part of why Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club's Emily Samuelson and Evan Bates are enjoying the Vancouver Games, The Detroit Free Press reports.

Bates and Samuelson are part of the U.S. ice dancing team and competition begins Friday.

From the Free Press article:

"Coming to the Olympics without the pressure of medaling, I think it's an amazing opportunity for them to see what it's all about and prepare themselves for the future," said Yaroslava Nechaeva, their coach at the Ann Arbor Figure Skating Club. "I think they have great potential. They're still going to do their best to perform, but it will be a great environment for them to enjoy the Olympics and get inspired for the next 4-8 years.

I agree a2roots! Very sad that this so called local news source cannot even write their own article about local skaters. Not only is there Evan and Emily who Evan has lived his whole life here graduating from Huron High, to the US Champions Charlie and Meryl who train in nearby Canton, and both attend U of M. What are the chances that two Olympic level teams train in our own area and attend school in our own town. I hope the paper is planning some very large amazing article for later this week when they take the ice to compete for the first time.

Nice to finally see samething about Emily and Evan. Totally amazing that it had to come from the Free Press and not staff of AnnArbor.com. I am not surprised just perplexed why our supposedly local media continues to do such a lousy job. Just goes to show that the lack of local coverage continues from the ashes of the Ann Arbor (S)News.
