A fire that started in a garage spread to a two-story home in the Amberly Grove subdivision in Ypsilanti Township early today, fire officials said.

Fire Capt. Brad Johnson said a resident was working on a car in the garage when it caught fire just before 10 a.m. By the time firefighters arrived at the home at 7187 Spyglass Lane, the fire had spread, Johnson said.

It's unclear what caused the car to start on fire. Johnson said a damage estimate is not yet available.

Firefighters were still on the scene at 11:30 a.m., but the fire was deemed under control, Johnson said.

Off-duty Ypsilanti Township firefighters and Ypsilanti firefighters assisted.

No further details were immediately available.

Did the homeowner have a plan or a fire extinguisher? If not a perfect example to the rest of us why you need to prepare for emergencies, have the appropriate basic tools at hand to deal with emergencies right NOW, whole you wait for help to arrive. If you don't have a fire extinguisher get one. Have an alternate plan. Water probably won't work on a car fire. Do you happen to have a bucket of sand nearby? Maybe a bunch of baking soda in the fridge? Can the fire be smothered, like with a wet blanket? Tools and a plan can make an event a minor situation rather than a life changing EMERGENCY as above. Those who know me, know this should be applied to other situations as well. Happy Holidays and be safe. 1*

Im assuming "it" was the car that started on fire. I took a walk over that way. Really is devastating esp right before the holidays.
