Development of the Hickory Woods Park was estimated to cost about $1.6 million, according to the Pittsfield website.
In 2009, the township received a $300,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Natural Resources as part of that year’s Development Grant Awards.
Construction on the site began in 2009 with the demolition of existing buildings, landscaping and the creation of a playground center. Township Supervisor Mandy Grewal said the township recently received a $14,000 grant from the of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Grewal said over the course of the next several months, 20 acres of oak barrens and a savannah habitat will be restored to provide habitat for waterfowl and other migratory birds.
“This is going to provide recreational choices for hundreds of our residents who did not previously have any,” Grewal said. “We’ve received many positive comments from residents.”

For as long as construction has taken, they could have built another Hoover Dam! It seems like the contractor's equipment was sitting idle for the majority of the time "work" was being done. The entire project should have only taken 2 or 3-months at the most.

I would've preferred a smaller one on that side of town and at least a small park on the northwest side of the township.

I wonder how much the project actually cost. The article show the projection of 1.3 million but I would guess it was much more than that. Also, projects like these and their cost overruns is one of the factors that come into play when the city needs to ask residents for increased taxes. Everyone can see the good in park land but 839 acres for a small town like Pittsfield seems a bit much and I wonder if the 839 number is counting all the nature/wetland preserves the city has created.

@MAS, just where exactly is the "small town" of Pittsfield? Is there a "downtown area"? It's a township with lots of open areas and seeing as I live in this "Township" I for one am glad they are doing something constructive with the former golf course. Oh, and by the way I pay a lot less in property taxes than folks in Ann Arbor.
