Ypsilanti Public Schools' existing mascot is the Phoenix and its colors are purple and gold. Willow Run Community Schools is the red and white Flyers.
Suggestion boxes will be placed in the main offices of all middle and high school buildings in both the Ypsilanti and Willow Run districts. Residents also can submit their ideas electronically by emailing WISD Communications Director Emma Jackson at ejackson@wash.k12.mi.us.

The forums will be:
- 10 a.m. Saturday, March 16 at the Willow Run Intermediate Learning Center, 235 Spencer Lane
- 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 20 at Ypsilanti High School Media Center, 2095 Packard Road
The selection of a new mascot for the combined Ypsilanti-Willow Run school district is being led by an advisory group of board and community members. Student focus groups on this topic also were formed at all of the secondary schools, and the adult committee has met with each of the student groups to get their feedback.
"The students have indicated they want to be involved in this process and they have lots of great ideas," Board Trustee Maria Sheler-Edwards, who is co-chairing the advisory committee, said in a media release Thursday. "The student feedback has been upbeat and positive and we are looking forward to working with the community to select a mascot."

It's already been rumored the colors have been picked and are black and gold so, why the charade?

Combine the two. Willow Run Fliers with a B24 on it? Or just keep the logos and merge them. Otherwise, can't wait to see see the fun in September.

Oh yeah, New name, new colors, new uniforms for all teams, new logo painted on gym floors, new signs, new merchandise. Just look at all the money we are saving! All for a group of students where less than 10% are minimally proficient at their grade level. Why don't the schools consider eliminating all sports until minimal academic standards are achieved - not based on GPA's, but on standardized test scores.

Can't have the Phoenix. The mythical bird will be offended. Can't have the Flyers. The shoe company that gave us PF Flyers will be offended. Need to come up with something so benign that no one will be offended. Or is that even possible. Wish people would get a grip and stop with all the politcal correctness. But then again, what about our National Anthem? The land of the free and the home of the brave? Can we really use the word Brave? Can't seem to use it as a mascot?

I'm not sure why it's necessary to change the school colors. It is just not cost effective to change everything because of the merge. New mascot, fine but the colors? Too much. We're trying to save money and be more efficient.

Suggestion I heard...keep Ypsi's colors purple/gold and WR's Flyers. Add wings to a Y.

I'll be curious to see what they come up with. It'd be nice if they could somehow combine the two, but I don't think there's a logical combination to Phoenix and Flyers out there (not a fan of Flying Phoenix).

The "Liberator" was the nickname of B-24 Bomber Plane that was built at the Willow Run Manufacturing Plant during World War II. The Liberator Plane made a great contribution of the defeat of Nazi Germany, one of the greatest oppressors of modern history.

Maybe Sheler-Edwards is finally putting that PR experience to work. Give the public news that the board does not care nor listen to anything they have to say about important issues like who is going to run the district and then placate them with this nonsense while deciding the actual important stuff in private. Sorry, as a parent in the district, I couldn't care less about the school colors or mascots. I'm more worried about the education. Wake me up when we actually start talking about something important.
