Ypsilanti High School Top Scholars

Ypsilanti High School held its 2012 graduation ceremonies Tuesday, June 5, 7 p.m. at the EMU Convocation Center. The class included 222 graduates.

Karen Marie Bates
Parents: Cathy Thorburn & David Bates
Activities & Awards: Karen has been the captain of the YHS swim team for the past two years. She was the president of The Key Club, and vice-president of National Honor Society. Karen teaches public speaking to elementary students through the Estabrook Oratorical Society. She plays French Horn in the Wind Symphony and Marching Band.
Plans After Graduation: Karen will be going to the University of Michigan to study History and Anthropology.

Parents: Michael Harback & Andrea Berg
Activities & Awards: Ellington has worked rigorously in the community theatre scene of southeast Michigan. He has enjoyed his time playing a variety of roles, everything from a French Vietnamese pimp in "MISS SAIGON" to a Mother in "HAIRSPRAY." Acadamically he has received the President's Scholarship from Otterbein University and other various awards from Western Michigan.
Plans After Graduation: Ellington will be taking a gap year before attending college in the 2013-2014 semester. He wants to pursue acting.

Samantha Marie Goven
Parents: Donald & Karyn Goven
Activities & Awards: Samantha was the Senior Class President as well as captain of the swim team and soccer team. She has served as the Drum Major of the YHS Marching Band. Samantha enjoys dance and animals. She would like to thank her family for all their support for the last four years.
Plans After Graduation: Samantha will be attending Michigan State University to major in Zoology.

Theodore Johnson

Parents: Ernest & Valerie Johnson
Activities & Awards: Theodore has held the leadership position of Group Commander with a rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Ypsilanti High School Air Force ROTC program. He was also the Commander of the Advanced Drill Team, Inspection Team, and held the post of the Color Guard Rifleman. He would like to thank his parents for instilling the characteristics he needs for success in life.
Plans After Graduation: Theodore will be attending the University of Toledo to study Pre-Med.

Parents: Anne & Gregory Nanton
Activities & Awards: Briana was a member of the YHS Varsity Soccer Team. She was a semi-finalist for the National Merit Scholarship. She was a vital member of the Mock Trial Team and the Yearbook Committee. Briana volunteers at the Safe House in Ann Arbor. She would like to thank her parents for always being supportive and pushing her to success.
Plans After Graduation: Briana will be going to New York University to study Biochemistry.

Parents: John & Pam Roberts
Activates & Awards: Courtney is a proud member of National Honor Society. She has been a member of our golf team for three years, and was co-captain of the team. Courtney served a team leader for the Algebra Project, where she helped develop the vision of the program. She enjoys helping fellow students by tutoring.
Plans After Graduation: Courtney will be going to Concordia University and plans to major in Biology with a minor in Chemistry.

Parents: Walt & Alyce Sangster
Activities & Awards: Anna was a member of National Honor Society. She plays percussion in Wind Symphony and Marching Band. Anna holds the position of Laurel Class President at her local Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She also volunteers in the community by offering childcare to families.
Plans after graduation: Anna will be attending Brigham Young University, and wants to pursue Pediatric Cardiology.

Emma Katherine Swanson
Parents: Mark & Debbie Swanson
Activities & Awards: Emma was a four-year member for the Varsity Softball and Swim Team. She was an active member of the high school band. She held the role of Treasurer for the Key Club. Emma would like to express her appreciation to all her teachers and thank her family for their continued support.
Plans After Graduation: Emma will be attending Macalester College in St. Paul, MN to play softball and study Biological Science.

Parents: Gary & Laura Wilbanks
Activities & Awards Aaron was the vice president of YHS Key Club. He was also an active member of the Senior Cabinet and National Honor Society. Aaron has also been very active in the performing arts by playing tuba and acting in many plays. He is a founding member of the Estabrook Oratorical Society, an organization that teaches elementary school students the art of public speaking.
Plans After Graduation: Aaron will be attending Michigan State University, where he plans to major in Integrated Media Arts.

Activities & Awards: Rachel was the YHS Class of 2012 Valedictorian. She was a member of the swim team and captain of the soccer team. She was an active member of the National Honor Society, Senior Cabinet, and held the position of Sergeant of Arms for the Key Club. She also volunteers with the Estabrook Oratorical Society.
Plans After Graduation: Rachel will be going to the University of Michigan to study Pre-Med.

I know all of these young graduates and they are representative of the outstanding scholars that routinely graduate from Ypsilanti High School. My congratulations to you and your families and I wish you the best as you continue to achieve.
