A triathlon with a twist is among the activities scheduled for the 32nd annual Huron River Day Sunday.

The festival offers free and reduced family-friendly activities, beginning at 8 a.m. with the “Tri the Huron Triathlon” at the starting line in Gallup Park.

Participants will bike about 3.5 miles to Argo Park, run or walk around Argo Pond, and then kayak 3.7 miles from the Argo Livery to the Gallup Livery. Registration is required.

For non-racers, a naturalist-guided paddling trip will leave the Gallup Livery at 11 a.m. and return at noon.

The bulk of Huron River Day activities kick off at noon at Gallup Park and last until 4 p.m.

Canoe and kayak rentals will be $5 - unless you travel to the event by bike, in which case all boat rentals will be free.

There will be live music along the banks of the Huron River, as well as children’s art and science activities, bubbles, games, a canoe photo booth, a live animal program, butterfly house and stand-up paddle boarding.

A classic small boat show will also be at the festival. Food vendors include a hot dog stand, Pilar’s tamales, Italian ice and Zingerman’s baked goods.

I was told the river is low and there are no rapids to do any tubing or fun kayaking. I am also rather miffed to be reading about this stuff today instead of what is proposed to be fun stuff at Gallup. We would be there but as usual I have to read it on line. Guess it goes without saying, need to be in the know to know what is going on. Plus with it back in the 90's today, I really do not go anywhere. So sad these temps just can't stay in the 70's.

The river is very low due to the lack of rainfall, and the ponds are filled with lillies and algae, clogging many of the waterways. Some parts of the river from Argo Livery to Gallup Livery are so low, that it is nearly impossible to traverse on the water.

OK look -- get up and pull your kayak 30 feet.....it won't kill you to get your feet wet.....also remember still waters run deep! stay left and you'll fine

Thanks for the heads up, we were contemplating moonlight kayaking with the kids. I was more worried about the usual issues of fast water and entrapments but low water though less dangerous sounding, doesn't strike me as a good time either.

"a naturalist-guided paddling trip"...I can't help but laugh and think of our very popular local "naturalist"
