Philip Hanlon will be leaving University of Michigan —where he serves as provost, chief academic officer and chief budgeter— this summer to lead his alma mater Dartmouth College.

On Friday, 57-year-old Hanlon visited Hanover, N.H., and was introduced to the Dartmouth community.

"When provosts get together we spend most of our time swapping stories about our boards," Hanlon said during a speech. "Dartmouth has a terrific Board of Trustees. To a person, they are smart, they are experienced and they are totally dedicated to the college."

Hanlon begins as the Ivy League college's president July 1. He's promised to teach undergraduate math during his tenure as president.

Hanlon, a 26-year veteran of U-M, has been a member of the faculty at the university since 1986, teaching mathematics and, most recently, a course on the university budget. He has served as provost since 2010.

His departure was publicly announced in November. U-M has not publicly determined who will replace him.
