University of Michigan Regents consider $5 million project to demolish 2 medical buildings
Two University of Michigan medical buildings would face the wrecking ball under a $5 million demolition project that U-M Board of Regents will consider Thursday.
The University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers is proposing the demolition of the Parkview Medical Center and Scott and Amy Prudden Turner Memorial Clinic, according to meeting materials published online in advance of the regents' meeting. Parkview is adjacent to the W.K. Kellogg Eye Center, 1000 Wall Street, on Ann Arbor’s north side, while the Turner building is adjacent to Parkview.
The Parkview Medical Center was built in 1967, and the Turner Memorial building was built in 1976, according to the Bentley Historical Library website. Both have been closed since the summer of 2010, after activities at both buildings were shifted to Brehm Tower and the Kellogg Eye Center, said Tony Denton, chief operating officer of the U-M Hospitals and Health Centers.

Brehm Tower is an eight-story, 230,000-square-foot, $132 million eye care and diabetes research and clinical complex adjacent to the west side of the Kellogg Eye Center. The expansion project was approved by the U-M Board of Regents in July 2005 and completed in early 2010.
U-M Hospitals and Health Centers have planned on the demolition for several years, according to meeting materials.
The $5 million project entails renovation of the eastern side of Kellogg Eye Center. The center will receive a new point of entry and an expansion of its parking lot. The project includes the architectural, electrical and mechanical work needed to complete the improvements, meeting materials state.
Parking will be temporarily disrupted, although 75 parking spots will be added at the project’s completion.
Regents will meet at 3 p.m. Thursday in the Regents' Room of the Fleming Administration Building.
