University of Michigan hospitals maintain top position in U.S. News & World Report ranking
Newly released U.S. News & World Report rankings have named the University of Michigan Hospitals and Health Centers as offering the best hospital care in the state for the second year in a row, officials said Tuesday.
U-M also tops the list for best hospitals in metro Detroit -- the third year it has held that title in the U.S. News & World Report ranking.

- U-M Hospitals and Health Centers
- Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak (#2 in metro Detroit)
- Spectrum Health in Grand Rapids
- Harper University Hospital in Detroit(#3 in metro Detroit)
- Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit
This is the second year Michigan rankings of 178 hospitals have been available.
St. Joseph Mercy Ann Arbor Hospital rose in its ranking from last year: It is now the ninth-best hospital in metro Detroit for patient care -- up from 12th last year -- and the 11th-best hospital in the state -- up from 16th last year.
Nationally, U-M continues to be ranked among top institutions for the specialty care it provides. Three percent of the total 4,806 facilities surveyed by U.S. News earn such a national ranking.
Out of 16 specialty care evaluated by the ranking system, U-M landed a top-tier designation in 12 specialty areas -- including four in which it was listed in the top 20 in the country: Ear, nose and throat (No. 14); opthamology (No. 11); rheumatology (No. 15) and urology (No. 14). Last year U-M was in the top 20 for seven specialty care areas.
U-M's C.S. Mott Children's Hospital also received high marks in the U.S. News & World Report rankings. Most notably, Mott was named the sixth-best hospital in the country for pediatric cardiology and heart surgery.
About 83 percent of patients would recommend U-M hospital care to friends and family, while 2 percent answered "probably or definitely not."
The response is similar to what patients at St. Joe's reported to U.S. News: 82 percent of patients said they'd recommend St. Joe's to friends and family, while 2 percent said they wouldn't recommend it.

Everyone I know here would rather go to St Joe's than UM. They only go there if they have to for a specialty such as blood marrow transplant.

U of M has the best staff and equipment, I'm sure. However, I love that St. Joe's rooms are all single occupancy. That will really affect my decision about which hospital to select the next time I have to decide. My husband was at U of M a few years ago and he had complications after his surgery. I believe a big part of his after-surgery complications came from his inability to get any sleep because staff and friends and family were constantly coming into the room for his roommate. I would love U of M to expand to the point where it can give all of its patients single rooms.

My experience, after being a patient at both U of M and St. Joes is completely different from these ratings. St. Joes provides better patient care by far and that includes doctors, procedures, nurses and care by other staff. U of M staff teat you like a thing...a number, and the supposed experts just make a lot of expensive mistakes. There is one exception and that is the MOHS Cancer Center, but even that building is so poorly planned that patients and visitors are lost in the building all the time.

A friend of mine was sent home after a thyroid operation without any thyroid meds. They found out when she went for a followup visit and they said, What? No one gave you anything. You should have on it for the last two weeks.

I've been very happy with St Joe's. I can't say the same of UofM.

So who was stuck on hold with UMHS listening to the short version of this story running on a loop and decided to find out more about it? LOL I could hear the voice as I read this. Seriously though, we are big UM fans and patients here. We're thankful to have a fantastic hospital and children's hospital so close to home. Of course we've had our share of disappointments with some care and billing issues, after all no hospital system is perfect. But, especially compared to the horrific experiences we had with St Joseph Health System, we are never leaving our beloved UM doctors. We are definitely part of the 2% that would never send anyone to St Joseph...we wouldn't even set foot there unless we couldn't live the 10 minutes it would take to get to UM.

In my opinion, as a patient, Chelsea Hospital is #1.

Not since they were purchased by St Joe's.

WholeDude - Whole Performance: I am happy to read the news story and yet the same time I have to verify the validity of any given statement. If a thing is said to be true, I must know as to why it is true. This report is based upon two criteria; 1. a ranking system based upon number of procedures/medical interventions performed in a particular area of a medical specialty at the given hospital, and 2. a ranking system devised by a survey of medical specialists. It further justified its claims by quoting patient-satisfaction surveys. None of them provide objective evidence to prove that the story could be true. I would prefer a medical audit system where the medical documents of patients are carefully scrutinized to ascertain that the procedure/intervention is medically justified, is in fact performed as per established standards, and the procedure/intervention has the major role in obtaining a satisfied outcome.

Talk about spin... so they really declined this year in terms of the number of specialty areas listed in the top 20 nationwide - 4 this year vs. 7 last year. Were they ranked in the top 10 for anything, nationally? Seems to me they used to be, but maybe the competition has improved. Just another damned survey, anyway. If not for surveys, I'm not sure what the staff at this blog would do.
