The Central Power Plant provides steam for the heating, cooling and electricity of several university buildings.

The control system upgrades, which "will affect reliability and monitoring and optimize overall efficiency of the power plant," according to U-M Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer Timothy P. Slottow, were approved by the U-M Board of Regents Thursday during a meeting in Flint.

The plant will continue to operate through construction, which will be completed in phases and is scheduled to finish in fall 2014.

Funding for the upgrades will be provided from an already existing utility resources fund. The school has chosen Iowa-based engineering firm Stanley Consultants to design the upgrades.

The upgrades come after U-M President Mary Sue Coleman's pledge last month to reduce greenhouse gas emissions on campus by 25 percent.

The pledge was part of a $14 million sustainability initiative.

With all the unemployment in Michigan, you would think they could find an engineering firm here, instead of Iowa?

They have had an important lane of traffic on Huron closed for about 2 months now but nothing seems to be happening. Is that lane going to be closed for two years?
