Thief breaks window, swipes jewelry at Kohl's store in Pittsfield Township

By Cindy Heflin

Someone broke a front window at the Kohl’s department store in Pittsfield Township early Friday morning and stole jewelry from a glass case before fleeing, Pittsfield Township police said.

Two employees working the night shift at the store at 3160 Lohr Road heard glass breaking near the front of the store about 12:40 a.m. and called 911, police said in a press release.

Pittsfield Police and an Ypsilanti officer with a dog went to the store and tried to find the suspect. The dog tracked the suspect a short distance east and south but did not locate anyone.

No one was injured in the incident, and the suspect did not see or speak to the store employees, police said. The only description available was that the suspect was wearing all black, including a long black coat.

Sounds like the thief had a getaway car, if the dog could only track him or her a short distance east and south. Towards residential areas, not I-94. Emeralds and jade jewelry targeted for St. Patrick's Day?

I'm already wondering how many criminals are going to get away because of the disappearing snow. Footprints in snow often help cops catch criminals. Not sure it could ever happen at that Kohl's location, but it isn't in an urban jungle.

They couldn't wait another day for the stuff to go on sale?

Kohl's? They do have some nice watches, jewelry, and great clothes. However nothing that could be re-sold for any significant amount of cash or drugs. This perp was very brazen and or desperate along with very lucky. There is not really anywhere to run and hide in that area. I am surprised the doggy did not nip this one in the butt.

Do they actually sell anything at Kohls that you could pawn or trade for drugs?

Dear John, I had no idea that the stuff that Kohls sells in their cases would be considered "jewelery" on the resale/pawn market.
