St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Superior Township is one of the top 100 hospitals in the U.S., according to an annual report released Monday by the Ann Arbor- based health care arm of Thomson Reuters.

Local hospitals St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital in Howell, St. Joseph Mercy Saline Hospital and Chelsea Community Hospital - all a part of the St. Joseph Mercy Health System - were also included on the list.

The annual report from Thomson Reuters uses Medicare claims data from hospitals around the country in 2007 and 2008.

The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals: National Benchmarks Study looked at hospitals that were general and specialty, short-term, acute care, non-federal hospitals in the U.S.

They were rated based on factors like risk-adjusted measurements of patient deaths, complications and readmissions, among other factors, the report says.

Other Michigan hospitals that also made the list include:

• St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas City
• Providence Hospital and Medical Center in Southfield
• Allegiance Health in Jackson
• Munson Medical Center in Traverse City
• Holland Hospital in Holland
• Spectrum Health Hospital group in Grand Rapids

According to a statement from Thomson Reuters, if all Medicare patients in the hospitals received the same level of care as those listed, an additional 98,000 patients would survive every year, 197,000 patient complications would be avoided, and expenses would be reduced by $5.5 billion a year.
