Saline High School Top Scholars

Saline High School held its 2011 graduation ceremonies Sunday, June 5 at the Saline High School Hornet Field. The class included 412 graduates.

Andrew Barnett

Parents: Kerry and Cynthia Barnett

Activities and Awards: Andrew is actively involved in Science Olympiad and a member of the National Honor Society. He was All State in both cross country and track, where he has also been a member all four years of high school. He has been captain for both teams. Andrew has earned the distinction of being a National Merit Finalist.

Plans after graduation: Andrew is considering attending Stanford University, where he is interested in studying economics or neurobiology.

Beverly Chou

Parents: David and Amy Chou

Activities and Awards: Beverly received the University of Michigan Regents Merit Scholarship. She has been on the Saline High School Honor Roll and has received the AP Scholar Award. She is a member of the Marching Band where she is the clarinet squad leader, and she is also a member of the folk-punk band The Maracas of Invincibility. Beverly is also a member of the National Honor Society and serves as a Student Council School Community Committee Chair. She helped found the Saline Ultimate Frisbee club. Beverly has also been a committed member of the track and cross country teams.

Plans after graduation: Beverly will study engineering at the University of Michigan.

Nathaniel Cook

Parents: Christopher and Kathleen Cook

Activities and Awards: Nate has been awarded the University of Illinois Chancellor's and University Achievement Scholarships. He is a member of the U.S. Rowing Scholastic Honor Roll and is a state champion in the Men's Lightweight 8+. He is a National Merit Finalist. Nate is a member of the Saline High School Science Olympiad Team as well as the Ultimate Frisbee Club. During his four years of high school, he has been on the Saline High School Rowing Team.

Plans after graduation: Nate is deciding between attending the University of Notre Dame or the University of Illinois, where he plans to study environmental engineering/geosciences.

David Dolsen

Parents: Daniel and Kristen Dolsen

Activities and Awards: David received the English Department Award during his sophomore year, has been on the honor roll from ninth-12th grade, and is a member of the National Honor Society. He is the recipient of the Saline Cross Country Blue Arrow Award and has run both cross country and track for the past four years. He was the cross country team captain. David is a member of the Saline Marching Band and for two years has served as a squad leader. David is also a member and leader of the high school Men's Bible Study group.

Plans after graduation: David will attend the University of Michigan in the fall.

Justin Eck

Parents: Patricia and David Eck

Activities and Awards: Justin is a recipient of the Saline High School Men's Soccer Character Counts Scholarship. He has also consistently been on the honor roll. Justin is a squad leader of Saline High School's Marching Band, Jazz Band and is a member of National Honor Society and Link Crew Leader. He has also been a member of the JV and varsity men's soccer team throughout high school.

Plans after graduation: Justin is deciding between attending the University of Michigan or Purdue University to major in Engineering.

Andrea Frailey

Parents: John and Tracie Frailey

Activities and Awards: Andrea has received the Honors College Scholarship from Michigan State as well as the Professional Assistantship Scholarship. She has been on National Honor Society for two years, has been SEC All-Academic and she has been the recipient of the Social Studies Department Award from Saline High School. Andrea has also been involved in the athletic program at Saline High School, playing varsity volleyball. She has also been in the marching band.

Plans after graduation: Andrea plans on attending Michigan State University to study psychology and statistics.

Hannah Gingerich

Parents: Peggy James-Gingerich and Keith Gingerich

Activities and Awards: Hannah has received the University of Michigan Regents Merit Scholarship. Her honors include being a member of the 2010 MSBOA All-State Band, a member of the 2009 Michigan Youth Arts Festival featured saxophone quartet as well as a national Merit Commended Student. Hannah has been involved in many activities such as the Michigan Youth Band, the Saline High School Jazz Band and the Saline High School Model UN. Her leadership roles include being an alto saxophone section leader in the Saline High School Marching Band, a saxophone section leader in the Saline High School Jazz Band and the lead saxophonist in the Saline High School Jazz Band. Along with Hannah's musical ability, she is also an athlete, running cross country, track and field.

Plans after graduation: Hannah plans to attend the University of Michigan and study Spanish and public health.

Alison Hendricks

Parents: Dave and Joan Hendricks

Activities and Awards: Alison has been the recipient of the Principal All-State Orchestra Trombonist Award for 2011 as well as the Principal Michigan Youth Arts Festival Band Trombonist, 2010, and she was also nominated the Michigan Youth Arts Festival Soloist for 2009. Alison has also been involved in the Michigan Youth Orchestra, the Saline Jazz Band and the Detroit Civic Wind Symphony. Her other accomplishments are the marching band trombone section leader, and the Saline Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band section leader. Alison also has been a co-founder of Emmanuel Lutheran Church's Youth Group.

Plans after graduation: Alison plans to attend the University of Michigan and study trombone performance.

Anne Kalinowski

Parents: David and Susan Kalinowski

Activities and Awards: Anne received the University of Michigan Regents Merit Scholarship. She has been on the honor roll for three years and has received the All "A" Academic Award from Saline High School. Her achievements also include receiving the 2009 Michigan Statistics Poster Competition-Honorable Mention. Anne is involved at Saline High School in the Link crew, cross country, track and National Honor Society. She is also a very big part of the LIFE church youth group.

Plans after graduation: Anne plans to attend the University of Michigan and will study chemistry.

Alyssa Keefer

Parents: John Keefer and Mari Keefer

Activities and Awards: Alyssa has received the Regents Scholarship and the Residence Hall Award. She has been a three year honor roll award recipient, an All "A" Academic Award winner and has been awarded the Varsity Award. Alyssa has also done Link crew, Saline Youth Baseball and has been active at the Saline Community Church. She has also been a four-year member of the dance team at Saline High School.

Plans after graduation: Alyssa plans to attend Eastern Michigan University and is hoping to study occupational therapy.

Sarah Ottum

Parents: Mona and Brian Ottum

Activities and Awards: Sarah has been on the Gold Honor Roll and has earned the All A's Award. She has been actively involved in dance and Girl Scouts having won the Girl Scout Silver Award. While at Saline High School, Sarah has been a member of the tennis team in each of her four years of school.

Plans after graduation: Sarah plans to attend the University of Michigan and study biomedical engineering

Nicole Ozminkowski

Parents: Cecilia Fellin and Ronald Ozminkowski

Activities and Awards: Nicole has been a four-year member of the Gold Honor Roll, a finalist for the MHSAA Scholarship and has won the Social Studies Department Award. Nicole has held such leadership positions as serving as an officer with the National Honor Society and captain of the Saline High School Varsity Swim Team. Athletically, Nicole has been an active member of the track team as well as the state championship swim team.

Plans after graduation: Nicole plans to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology to study chemical engineering

Addison Parker

Parents: Daryl and Dorena Parker

Activities and Awards: While at Saline High School, Addison has been on the Gold Honor Roll and has earned the All A Academic Award. Addison has attended the National Young Leaders State Conference as well as the Global Young Leaders Conference. While at the Global Young Leaders Conference, Addison served as the mediator for Scholar Led Debate. Addison has been a member of the Saline High School Track and Field Team as well as being active with Jehovah's Witnesses.

Plans after graduation: Addison plans to attend the University of Michigan to study engineering.

Kristen Powell

Parents: Lisa and Harlond Powell

Activities and Awards: Kristen received the DECA Award of Excellence, the Freshmen Social Studies Award and the Scholar Athlete Award. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Model United Nations and DECA. In addition to having attended the International DECA Conference and the Model United Nations Conference, Kristen has attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. She has been actively involved in athletics, having run cross country and track, as well as participating in soccer and lacrosse.

Plans after graduation: Kristen plans to attend the University of Michigan and study pre-law.

Kenneth Qin

Parents: Hui Zhu and Zhenwei Qin

Activities and Awards: Kenneth is a National Merit Finalist and has earned the AP Scholar with Distinction Award. In addition to being on the National Honor Society, Kenneth is also a member of the Science Olympiad, Future Problem Solving Club and marching band, having been the principal percussionist in MSBOA All-State High School Band. He has participated in the Michigan Math and Science Scholars Summer Program. Kenneth is an avid runner and has been a member of Saline High School's Cross Country and Track teams.

Plans after graduation: Kenneth plans to attend Stanford University and study biology.

Nathan Sawicki

Parents: Charles and Lori Sawicki

Activities and Awards: Nathan has received the University of Michigan Regents Merit Scholarship, as well as the Thomas J. Watson Memorial Scholarship. During high school, Nathan was a National Honor Society member, a member of both the marcing band and jazz band, and for five years has been active with the Ann Arbor Adopt-a-Family program. Nathan's honors include being a Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition Finalist, receiving the Music Departmental Award for outstanding merit, numerous proficiency 1 ratings at State Solo and Ensemble Competition and the Saline Hornet Golf Academic Award for having the highest grade point average of both JV and varsity golfers. Nathan is the originator and leader of the Saline Charity Caroling Band and he was a section leader, squad leader and soloist for the Saline High School marching band.

Plans after graduation: Nathan will attend the University of Michigan where he will study engineering.

Jeremy Seeman

Parents: Pamela and Corey Seeman

Activities and Awards: Jeremy has been awarded the University of Chicago University Scholar Scholarship, as well as the University of Michigan Regents Scholar Scholarship. Jeremy is an AP Scholar with Distinction, a Coca-Cola Scholars Semifinalist and a National Merit Finalist. Throughout high school, he has participated in Science Olympiad and been a member of the Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra. Jeremy has participated in the Michigan Youth Arts Festival and the Michigan All-State Orchestra. He is the principal cellist of the Michigan Youth Symphony Orchestra and principal cellist of the Saline High School Chamber Orchestra.

Plans after graduation: Jeremy will attend the University of Chicago, where his field of study will be physics.

Sarah Tommelein

Parents: Todd and Donna Tommelein

Activities and Awards: While at Saline High School, Sarah has been a National Honor Society member and a Link crew leader. (Link crew leaders are mentors that help freshman and new students adjust to the high school.) Sarah has been a four-year member of the Saline High School softball and field hockey teams. During her senior year, she served as captain for the varsity softball and varsity field hockey teams. She has received both softball and field hockey academic all-state awards. She also received the 2010 softball SEC honorable mention all-conference award.

Plans after graduation: Sarah will attend the University of Michigan, where she will study engineering.

Kristina Whitfield

Parents: Paul and Cheryl Whitfield

Activities and Awards: Kristina is a National Honor Society member, a Link crew leader, and a member of the Dance Alliance Repertory Co. She has received numerous honor roll awards and all 'A' academic awards. Kristina is also a National Merit Scholar Finalist.

Plans after graduation: Kristina plans to attend the University of Michigan. She will study education.

Kathy Yang

Parents: Heping Yang and Yao Pei

Activities and Awards: Kathy is a member of the Saline High School Marching Band, Science Olympiad and Varsity Lacrosse. Her significant leadership roles include lacrosse captain, Interact (youth division of Rotary) secretary and Wind Ensemble clarinet section leader. Kathy has earned All-State Band honors, received the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award and is a National Merit Finalist.

Plans after graduation: Kathy will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her field of study will be brain and cognitive science.
