Man found dead on Ann Arbor's north side died of self-inflicted gunshot
A man found dead on a wooded trail on Ann Arbor's north side Friday died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, police said this afternoon.
The man was a 52-year-old Ann Arbor resident who lived alone in the vicinity. He was found yesterday by a man who was walking his dog on a path near Tuebingen Park and the Leslie Park Golf Course.
Police say they were unable to locate the gun that the man used. They believe it was a 2-inch, .357-caliber revolver. Police are asking anyone with information about the weapon to contact the police department.
"There's a gun out there and someone or some people might know where," said Lt. Det. Mark St. Amour. "We just want to get it off the streets."
Anyone who has any information is asked to contact Ann Arbor Police Detective Bill Stanford at 734-794-6390, extension 49318, or call the Ann Arbor Police tip line at 734-794-6939.

@ ozog: I'm having a hard time understanding what you're saying, but I think you reinforce my arguement by pointing out that Ann Arbor averages 1 homicide per year (not sure if that is a legit stat or not). Nonetheless, a homicide is a homicide, whether it be one a year or 500 a year. Ann Arbor is a nice town, but certainly isnt immune to violent crimes.

@hotsauce_gm wheel were talking about a city that's really is a collage town,if there were a murder in ann arbor it would of been a school shooting which don't happen often, there are no ghettos in ann arbor it's a school, and the never was,and the kid who was shot and killed wasn't a murder it was accidental gun death, and he wasn't a kids, were talking about a town that averages 1 homicide per year, it would lake a very long time for a murder

@ generAL: there has definitely been murders in Ann Arbor within the past 30 years... I knew a kid that was shot and killed on the southeast side of Ann Arbor about 6 years ago.

Is there any update to this story? I live nearby and it would be a little more reassuring to know that they had recovered the weapon.

I agree, someone picked up the gun and didn't call 911. The police aren't stupid, they searched the area for the gun. They determined the caliber by the gun shot wound and that is how they know what they are looking for. The wooded and swampy areas have been searched.

A 2 inch barrel is fairly useless at a range of anything beyond 5 feet. Easy to smuggle or carry but good for little except suicide or point blank defense shots.

The 2inches refers to the size of the barrel, not the size of the gun.

"They believe it was a 2-inch,.357-caliber revolver"... never heard of a 2 inch,.357 revolver. If this is correct it could be any where in the under brush...

Self-inflicted gun wound, and no gun? Seems a bit strange...

maybe someone found the gun and thought, you know, maybe the government is getting to big and I might need this later

Is there a place on the website where annarbor.com's editorial policies are explained - on things like identification of crime victims?

Well maybe the gun used was found by someone and picked up without a call to 911 about the body, or a heavily wooded or swampy area and just not found yet.
