Fuller Pool closed until staff can refill it after overnight draining

Firefighters from Ladder 5 on Plymouth Rd. hooked up a hose to the fire hydrant outside of Fuller Park Pool to help fill the pool. The pool had to temporarily close after a drain was left open overnight.

Ann Arbor's Fuller Pool closed this morning after staff discovered that a backwash valve was left open, resulting in the loss of more than 3 feet of water.

"We're trying to deal with it quickly," said Jeff Straw, deputy parks and recreation supervisor.

One way that's happening: The Ann Arbor Fire Department showed up shortly before 10 a.m. to run a fire hose from a nearby hydrant.

Straw said it's possible that the pool may not open Thursday, though he and his staff will be monitoring the water level throughout the morning.

"It's unfortunate," he said about the pool closure on what's forecast to be the hottest day of the summer. The heat index could top 110, according to forecasts.

In addition to restoring the water level, staff will have to regulate chlorine balance before the pool can be opened to the public.

Straw said that a day camp offered at the pool was unaffected. He added that other city pools - Buhr Park and at Veteran's Memorial Park - will operate as usual today.

Swimmers can call the pool to check on its status, or watch the city's website for updates.

Put that ladder over the deep end, I'll show you a high-dive...

Firefighters are great, much needed and should be much appreciated--not taken for granted and certainly NOT laid off.

Re: Buhr Pool closure - There's a good article on snopes.com debunking the urine-detecting chemical myth. Someone urinating in a pool would have to be pretty obvious about it to get detected, not to mention pretty full to affect the water quality enough to warrant a closure.

Good to see they found a use for the ladder truck since we no longer have enough firefighters to staff it for use during a fire.

Maybe, the truck was on its way back from a grocery store run and stopped by to help.

Where in the article does it say how the backwash valve was left open?, and by who? Who, what, when, where, why and sometimes how....

The answer: does it matter?

@redwingshero-the question is "how" read again.

@Alaina-some, if not many pools today use chemicals that can turn die the water a specific color when it comes into contact with urine. Think of someone standing in the water and a decent size ploom around them turns a bright blue. I still love the babyruth gag in caddyshack- "Still good!"

Definitely not true. I was an aquatics professional and lifeguard for many years. There IS NO DYE! #urbanlegend

This is not true. There are no chemicals that can turn colors when in contact with urine. http://randomencountersofwe.blogspot.com/2008/03/myth-buster-monday-pee-in-pool.html

My son told me somebody urinated in the Buhr Pool yesterday and they kicked everybody out whilst cleaning it up. Reminded me of Caddyshack.

And let me tell you. 9 out of the 10 times I have visited those pools, they were closed down for however long because someone pooped in them.....Happens everyday......

That's a joke, right, smoke! Urine is present at all times in public pools. They will only close the pool if there are feces present.

Ha! Thanks for the info! I always thought the 'dye' thing was an empty threat that lifeguards used to scare little kids. That's pretty embarrassing!

Alaina, there is a special dye in the water. When someone pees in the pool, it turns green around them and permanently marks their swim suit.

Alaina

How could they tell if someone peed in the pool? And how do they 'clean it up'?

"he and his staff will be monitoring the water level throughout the morning" A little late for that, eh? And how many people does it take to monitor a pool refilling anyway?

Paula Gardner

Thu, Jul 21, 2011 : 2:42 p.m.

Not trying to imply that they'll all be watching it fill. They're keeping in touch about changes and how fast that means they can open.
