Second fire damages same unit in Sycamore Meadow Apartments
A woman and her young son were displaced by a fire tonight at Sycamore Meadow Apartments on MacArthur Boulevard, Superior Township fire officials said.
The fire broke out in the exact apartment gutted in a fast-moving fire in June 2008 that killed a 3-year-old boy.
The family involved in the deadly fire last year didn't currently live there. The woman and boy displaced tonight moved in less than a year ago, officials said.
No one was home when the 8:15 a.m. blaze broke out in apartment 8906. The cause of the fire is under investigation, but there's no reason to believe it's suspicious, Firefighter Don Sanford said.
Firefighters arrived on scene within four minutes of receiving the call and had the fire under control in less than 10 minutes, officials said.
"We made a very quick stop on it," Sanford said.
The 19-year-old woman and her 2-year-old son lost furniture, clothing and family photographs, family members said.
Shaqute Richards, 18, who lives in the building, said five of her family members evacuated. No other apartments were damaged.
"Just imagine if they didn't get here fast enough, the whole building would be on fire," she said. "Everybody in this building's got kids."
The fatal fire in the same apartment occurred on June 22, 2008.
Fire officials said at the time that 3-year-old Michael Jerome Jones-Fuller went back into his burning house to find his mother, but she had run to a neighbor's house for a fire extinguisher. It's unclear what caused that fire.
