Dexter High School Top Scholars

Dexter High School held its 2010 graduation ceremonies June 6 in their gymnasium. The class had 300 graduates.

Gabe Altomare

Parents name(s): Mark and Caroline Altomare

Activities and awards: Gabe was captain of the varsity wrestling team; an Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America; and editor and cartoonist of The Squall.

Plans after graduation: Gabe will be attending University of Michigan to study Astrophysics and biochemical engineering.

Rachel Brouwer

Parents’ name(s): Steve and Margaret Brouwer

Activities and awards: Rachel was a member of the varsity water polo team for three years receiving three varsity letters and held position as captain. She was also a member of the swim team receiving four varsity letters and earned Academic All-American honors. Rachel was a member of the National Honor Society, and is a member of her church youth group.

Plans after graduation: Rachel will be attending University of Michigan majoring in biology, pre-med. She would like to pursue a career as a pediatrician.

Caroline Buckley

Parents’ name(s): Craig and Rose Buckley

Activities and awards: Caroline has received the Scholar Athlete award and has earned a varsity letter in cross country, band, tennis, and drama. She also received outstanding achievement award in theater as well as best actress/female vocalist in a musical, and Director’s Choice Award for outstanding determination. Caroline took part in the school musicals: “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” “Anything Goes,” “Hello Dolly!,” “Back to the 80s!” She was a member of the Women in Science and Technology Club; vice president of the National Honor Society; a member of the Girls Scouts, Key Club, marching band and symphonic band.

Plans after graduation: Caroline will be attending the University of Michigan with plans to major in Communications/English Language and Literature.

Alexander Dobbs

Parents’ name(s): Arlan and Patricia Dobbs

Activities and awards: Alexander was a member of Varsity Basketball and Varsity Football Captain. He was a member of the National Honor Society.

Plans after graduation: Alexander plans to attend the Ross Business School at the University of Michigan.

Lauren Elizabeth Gardner

Parents’ name(s): Richard and JoAnn Gardner

Activities and awards: Lauren played the flute in Dexter High School's marching band and concert band, receiving a first division rating at the District Solo and Ensemble Festival for two years, and at the State Solo and Ensemble Festival in 2007. She played for four years on the Dexter High School Varsity Women's Tennis Team and was Varsity Captain for the past two seasons having played on a USTA Jr. Tennis Team since 2006. Lauren was a member of Student Council and Kiwanis Key Club for four years; Vice President of Student Council, two year member of the National Honor Society, and staff writer on Dexter High School's newspaper, The Squall. She has been a volunteer at Knox Presbyterian Church as a Teen Shepherd with Children's Worship since 2006. For three years, she has received the All Academic Achievement Award, the Varsity Award, and Scholar Athlete Award. In 2009, she received the Sportsmanship Awards for Southeastern Conference, All Conference Award for Southeastern Conference, and Championship Team Award for Southeastern Conference. She has also received awards in the following areas: Outstanding Student in Earth Science, Excellence in American Studies, Excellence in French, Outstanding Student in Biology, Excellence in Literature and Composition, Excellence in Economics, Outstanding Performance in AP U.S. Government and Politics, Outstanding Student in Chemistry.

Plans after graduation: Lauren will be attending the University of Michigan next year with plans to study Mass Communication Studies and Anthropology.

Dillon D. Kipke

Parents’ name(s): Daryl and Paula Kipke

Activities and awards: Dillon, a National Merit Scholar, has received the DAR Good Citizen Award, the SEC All-Conference Honorable Mention - football and rugby team. He was a member of the Key Club and president of the National Honor Society.

Plans after graduation: Dillon plans to attend University of Michigan - College of Engineering majoring in Chemical Engineering.

Waleed Mansour

Parents’ name(s): Kristi and Khaled Mansour

Activities and awards: Waleed was a member of the Key Club, the National Honor Society, the Ultimate Frisbee Club, and Jazz Choir. He starred in the high school musical “Back to the 80s,” and created Dread-Notes - a co-ed high school a cappella group; a member of SPACE and performed in two battle of the bands. He was a member of the junior varsity/varsity football team receiving All-Academic Achievement awards the past three years. Waleed received the Keeler Scholarship from the University of Michigan math department.

Plans after graduation: Waleed will be attending the University of Michigan majoring in Mathematics.

Elly Mioduszewski

Parents’ name(s): Betty and Mike Mioduszewski

Activities and awards: Elly participated in volleyball, basketball and softball. She received All SEC Top five Honors, the MIVCA Scholar Athlete award, earned summa cum laude, received the Dexter High School Scholar Athlete Award, and the Michigan Competitive Scholarship Award. Elly was a member of the National Honor Society.

Plans after graduation: Elly plans to attend the University of Michigan’s Center For International Business.

Lorna Mosher

Parents’ name(s): Mary Alice Greiner and Charles Mosher

Activities and awards: Lorna participated in choir for four years and the drama club for two years. She received the SEC All-Academic Scholar Award. Lorna was a member of the Young Women for Change and the National Honor Society. She also worked at the Dexter Pharmacy

Plans after graduation: Lorna plans to attend the University of Michigan, School of Language, Art and the Sciences

Allison Paciorka

Activities and awards: Allison was a member of the National Honor Society, the MSBOA All State Honors Band, Symphonic Band, and Marching Band. She was a member and secretary of the Key Club, and a St. Joseph Youth Group Member.

Plans after graduation: Allison plans to attend the University of Michigan Literature, Sciences and Arts.

Radhika Raghunathan

Activities and awards: Radhika has been a member of the Dexter High School Water Polo team for four years (Captain of the Varsity Water Polo Team) and the Swim Team for two years. She participated in flute, piano, Indian classical vocal music. Radhika has volunteered at Saline St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in the Emergency Department, American Red Cross for two years. She has taught swim lessons to children with disabilities in the summer. She is part of the Washtenaw Interfaith Round Table events, and Link Crew Leader. Radhika was a member of the National Honors Society (Math Night Chair). She has received the SEC All-Academic Team award, MHSAA Scholar Athlete awards for water polo and swimming receiving a Varsity Letter in Water Polo and Academics.

Plans after graduation: Radhika plans to attend the University of Michigan LSA Honors Program and become a Pediatrician.

Emily VanDusen

Parents’ name(s): Tracey and Brian VanDusen

Activities and awards: Emily was a track and field scholar athlete; a member of the Girl Scouts, receiving a silver award (gold award pending); and principal cello of the chamber orchestra. She was a member of the Girls State delegate 2009-Editor of Girls State newspaper; copy editor of DHS student newspaper, The Squall; and the World Cultures Club. Emily has received academic honors in English, Math, Social Studies, and Science.

Plans after graduation: Emily plans to attend the University of Michigan School of Literature, Science, and the Arts

Activities and awards: Nico has participated in varsity soccer. He was a member of the National Honor Society, Key Club, Pokemen Soccer Team. His awards include: National Merit Finalist, National Hispanic Scholar, Harvard Book Award, National Honor Society, National Society of High School Scholars, Summa Cum Laude, Penn Alumni Scholarship, Penn Gutenstein Scholarship, and Penn Academic Competitiveness Grant.

Plans after graduation: Nico plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania - Wharton School of Business.

Rebecca (Becky) Wortmann

Parents’ name(s): Dave and Sheila Wortmann

Activities and awards: Becky has been a competitive dancer for eight years. She has been a member of the DHS Concert/Symphonic Band and DHS Marching Band/Color Guard Captain for four years; a one year member of the National Honor Society; and the DHS Key Club. She has been involved as a Sunday school teacher and an assistant dance teacher. Becky has received awards in All SEC Academic Team, Burger King Scholar Award, achieved summa cum laude graduate, and awarded an Academic letter for four years. She was Girl State nominee, awarded Excellence in Pre-calc/Adv. Trigonometry, Outstanding Student in Chemistry, and Exceptional Student in French III.

Plans after graduation: Rebecca plans to attend the University of Michigan majoring in Business Administration/Accounting.

Kristen Yarows

Parents’ name(s): Steve Yarows

Activities and awards: Kristen participated in cross country where she was captain for two years and achieved All Region for four years and one time All State. She also participated in track and achieved All Region for four years and two times for All State. Kristen has been on the honor roll all four years. She was a member of the National Honor Society and nominated for citizen of the year.

Plans after graduation: Kristen will be attending the University of Wisconsin- Madison next year with plans to be part of cross country and track.
