Ann Arbor Community High School Top Scholars
Community High School held its 2010 graduation ceremonies June 1 at the University of Michigan Horace Rackham Auditorium. The class had 122 graduates.
Catrin DowdParents’ name(s): Ada Verbren and Gregory Dowd
Activities and Awards: Catrin founded UMCULO for Africa, a project that sends musical instruments to Africa. Catrin was the Bass Section Leader for the Pioneer High Orchestra and a Concerto Concert and Michigan Youth Arts Festival Soloist. She was a Young Arts Award Honorable Mention recipient, essay winner for the Campaign for the Convention on the Rights of the Child Symposium, and National Merit Finalist.
Plans after graduation: Catrin will continue her studies at Yale University.
Parents’ name(s): Deborah and Harvey Juster
Activities and Awards: Sarah was president of the Ann Arbor High School Chapter of STAND, a student anti-genocide coalition. She was also the national new chapter coordinator. Sarah was the Honorable Mention for the Davidson Institute’s project on international law and genocide and the Michigan Democratic Party Justice Caucus’ Rising Star Award winner.
Plans after graduation: Sarah plans to pursue African studies and Economics at Yale University.
Parents’ name(s): Elaine and John Mogerman, MD
Activities and Awards: Julian was the Co-Editor of the award-winning student newspaper, the Communicator, a Junior Rotarian and Harold Eastman Outstanding Youth Award winner. Julia has danced for many years with the Dance Theater Studio, performed with Ann Arbor’s Young Actors Guild and the Lights Up Company. She also served as a Curator for the UMS/Neutral Zone production of Breakin’ Curfew.
Plans after graduation: Julia will be attending the University of Michigan.
Parents’ name(s): Susana Castro-Pollard and Brian Porter-Szucs
Activities and Awards: Sophia was a state solo and ensemble music festival finalist and an award winning ballroom dancer. This bi-lingual Mexican-American has traveled to a number of counties and is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Society of High School Scholars.
Plans after graduation: Sophia plans to continue her education in intercultural and language studies at Northwestern University.
Parents’ name(s): Holly and Michael Sorscher
Activities and Awards: Hannah was a member of the National Honor Society, a Gold Medalist in the National Latin Examination and a National Merit Finalist. She had served as Head Copy Editor for the News Magazine Communicator, which was awarded the nation’s Pacemaker, the premier student journalism award in the United States.
Plans after graduation: Hannah will continue her studies at the University of Chicago.
Parents’ name(s): Rochelle and Robert Stoler
Activities and Awards: Kayla had been Co-Editor in Chief of the award winning student newspaper, the Communicator, and Co-Editor of Community High’s Literary Magazine Free Verse. Kayla was the recipient of the Detroit News’ CATCH Outstanding High School Graduate in Language Arts, a member of the Ann Arbor Ballet Company and a Commended Scholar by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.
Plans after graduation: Kayla will study at Wesleyan University.
