Fire burns tires, damages building at Scio Township farm

A pile of burning tires on a Scio Township farm caused minor damage to one wall of an outbuilding but did not result in any injuries, Dexter Fire Chief Loren Yates said.
About 30 firefighters fought the blaze near the intersection of North Parker and Marshall roads, Yates said. The fire is under control, he said at 8:50 a.m.
Firefighters aren't sure what caused the fire, which started about 8:10 a.m., said Scio Township Assistant Fire Chief Doug Armstrong.

When firefighters arrived, a large pile of hay with a tarp held down by tires and an adjacent pile of tires was on fire, Armstrong said. One side of a pole barn-like structure nearby was also on fire. Flames were shooting into the air, and smoke was visible from as far away as Dexter and Chelsea.
The Washtenaw County Hazardous Materials Team applied fire retardant foam to the blaze. Firefighters from Dexter, Chelsea, Manchester and Scio Township all fought the blaze.
Firefighters were still on the scene about 9:30 a.m.

I did see the smoke from this fire and had to pull to the side as a police vehicle drove by. I think we should just remember that accidents happen and fortunately no one was hurt. A farm will, of course, contain items that are more likely to catch on fire, like hay. Luckily this was able to get under control before any major damage could occur.

Hey Andy why is it that you are so ready to put blame on this person. Maybe it was you that started the fire because you have somehthing that upset you. Maybe the smell of the farm? Maybe you don't like farmers? Maybe you should go back to the city!! Things happen. Maybe we should be thankful nobody was hurt.

@Andy "Firefighters aren't sure what caused the fire" (Article text as of 10:15 am) It's premature to place blame.

Please assess fines for no burn permit and costs of entire response operation. This kind of carelessness shouldn't be on the communities dime. Smokey the Bear is not happy.

Drove by the fire this morning (apparently as it was just starting). They often are burning things in a burn barrel there, but that's typically on the other side of the barns/animals. This was the feed (hay?) on fire that is covered with tarps and uses tires to hold the tarps down. I wish I had called this in vs driving by this morning.. it took some time for it to click in my brain that there would not have been a burn permit given today due to high winds, etc.. The black smoke was quite impressive as visible from downtown Dexter (near the schools). I personally commend the firefighters that came from all over to put this out. It could have been much worse had the whole pile caught on fire.
