Police: Woman attempts to give man directions, discovers he's not wearing pants

By Kyle Feldscher

A 23-year-old Ann Arbor woman attempted to give a man directions early Wednesday morning when she realized he wasn’t wearing any pants, police said.

Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush said the woman was walking on the south side of the 1500 block of Hill Street toward Lincoln Avenue at 1 a.m. Wednesday when a black, four-door Honda Accord pulled up alongside her. The driver asked her for help getting to a particular location and the woman looked up directions on her phone.

Bush said the woman walked to the car to show the man the directions and, when she looked down, noticed he wasn’t wearing any pants.

The woman immediately walked away from the car and left the area. The driver drove the Accord toward South State Street.

The man is described as black, between 20 and 30 years old and with a medium build. Anyone with information on this incident is encouraged to call the Ann Arbor police anonymous tip line at 734-793-6939 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP (773-2587).

This is a very lucky woman...but not very smart walking alone at 1 a.m. It certainly could have been much worse. I won't even go out (across the road) to my mailbox after dark.

At 1AM, with an unknown car and driver, while you are alone... It could have been much worse. The first rule to get out of a dangerous situation is to avoid dangerous situations.

Is it inherently illegal to drive without pants on, or is it only illegal if you call people over and make them look at you? Inquiring minds want to know.

LXIX, "Delinquent" in this case doesn't mean "behind schedule." Michigan defines a sexually delinquent person as: "any person whose sexual behavior is characterized by repetitive or compulsive acts which indicate a disregard of consequences or the recognized rights of others, or by the use of force upon another person in attempting sex relations of either a heterosexual or homosexual nature, or by the commission of sexual aggressions against children under the age of 16." I guess that explains the popularity of estrogen/progestogen therapy for women and the little blue pill for men. Hear that, honey? There sending people to jail indefinitely for being "sexually delinquent".

It's inherently illegal to display one's private parts to another person, regardless of whether the extrovert is driving, walking or using a pogo stick. One can even be busted for "indecent exposure" in Michigan while in one's own home. (Seriously!) Many indecent exposure charges actually result from urinating in public, but that also opens the possibility of an aggravated indecent exposure charge because it involves touching one's private parts while giving them some fresh air. Indecent exposure is a misdemeanor. Aggravated indecent exposure is a high court misdemeanor. If you're sexually delinquent and indecently expose yourself, you could be incarcerated indefinitely - from 1 day to life. It's probably best just to keep things covered.

The television producer, World Wide Pants, would surely condemn this miscreant! OTH, if I were a woman in a helpful mood, I'd still be hesitant before approaching a single male driver in a car at 1:00 AM. This particular driver seems to have had plans of his own and had apparently prepared to carry out his plan by removing his pants before making contact with female pedestrians out walking alone at one in the morning (aka, "the middle of the night" etc.). One alternative to the response of this lone woman followed would be to remain in place, not coming closer to the car with the unknown driver, and to speak loudly, clearly (and helpfully): giving that unknown driver directions to the nearest police station (where they would be happy to help him find his way). Just asking: would this article read the same if the driver had been armed and successful in his effort to lure the unsuspecting woman closer? I'm betting: it would. ;-)

Is it an accurate assumption that to have no pants on in your car is a crime? Your car is more akin to the sidewalk than your living room in that regard?

Woman is walking on the South side of HIll St. towards Lincoln. Car pulls up alongside her (on the South side headed East). Woman gives directions and cars heads off towards S. State St. (West). Was the driver British by any chance? Either the car was on the wrong side of the road facing West or the driver did a big Uy (with no pants on, of course).

craigjjs

Thu, Nov 29, 2012 : 8:05 p.m.

If there was a round-a-bout and he drove through it without becoming lost or dizzy or running out of petrol, you would know he was British.

Kyle Feldscher

Thu, Nov 29, 2012 : 4:45 p.m.

LXIX - Police did not describe which way the car was going when it stopped. The possibilities I'm thinking of here are that the man pulled the car into the opposite lane to speak to the woman, the woman could have crossed the street to the westbound lane to talk to him or the driver could have made a U-turn after the incident. There's not a lot of traffic at 1 a.m. on Hill Street, so I suppose all of those are plausible. There was no mention if the driver was British.

Well I am glad this is all that happened... A car pulls along side you at 1am? You look down at your phone to get directions and are completely distracted, and then you walk up to the car to show the directions on your phone to the driver? This woman is lucky the only thing that happened was indecent exposure! There was a lot more potential here for more to happen...

I'm sorry for the woman who was trying to be helpful. The same thing happened to my friend and I back in the 70's on State St., only it was some white guy about 40. I was completely grossed-out and screamed, but my quick-witted friend exclaimed, "Whoa, that looks just like a xxxxx, only smaller!" Mr. Pantsless took off in a hurry. In retrospect, it probably wasn't the wisest move on our part, but we did report it once we stopped laughing. Even now when someone asks for directions, I still stand way back.

Andrea- The descriptions of the two men don't match up. The man who was down by the Huron was an older white man in his 60s-80s. I've called police for an update on his case. There was speculation that a man arrested Up North was the same flasher, but that was never confirmed.
