Police seeking videos of Ann Arbor parking structure beating
Daniel Brenner | AnnArbor.com
Ann Arbor police are hoping any witnesses who may have recorded an assault in an Ann Arbor parking structure Friday morning will step forward and provide footage to investigators.
Police are still trying to unravel what exactly happened on the first level of the Maynard Street parking structure around 2 a.m. Friday morning when two Dexter men were allegedly beaten by three Jackson men.
"A lot of people were videotaping the incident," said Ann Arbor police Lt. Renee Bush.
Bush said the fight started when a 21-year-old Dexter man bumped into one of the Jackson men. Police were first dispatched to The Necto, located at 516 East Liberty Street, where the confrontation reportedly began outside on the sidewalk, Bush said.
When police arrived, witnesses said the argument had carried over into the nearby parking structure on Maynard Street off of Liberty, where the two groups of men had parked.
"They were going to their cars to leave" when the fight broke out, Bush said.
The three Jackson men -- 18, 19 and 20 years old -- walked up behind the men and knocked down the 21-year-old Dexter man and kicked him continuously in the head, Bush said.
"The second victim got stomped," she added.
The 21-year-old man suffered extensive injuries to his face, head and neck. The 20-year-old was also injured. Both men were taken to the emergency room at the University of Michigan Hospital.
Police arrived at the structure and after getting a vehicle description from witnesses soon apprehended the three suspects, who were lodged in the Washtenaw County Jail overnight on charges of aggravated assault, police said. More charges could be forthcoming.
Anyone with information or video regarding the incident, is asked to contact Det. Dave Monroe at (734) 794-6930 ext. 49308.

Apparently you didn't read this part: "The three Jackson men -- 18, 19 and 20 years old -- walked up behind the men and knocked down the 21-year-old Dexter man and kicked him continuously in the head, Bush said. "The second victim got stomped," she added. The 21-year-old man suffered extensive injuries to his face, head and neck. The 20-year-old was also injured. If I were to bump into another person, I wonder if ( I'm so sorry sir) would have stopped further assult? Perhaps not, maybe just wishful thinking.

Didn't literally 'bump' into them. The 21 year old was near their car and they got in his face because he said 'Hi'. What kind of world is this that people can't greet each other past a certain time in fear of being hurt...

Blame the grown people that don't know how to handle their drink not the bar if the Necto closes they will just move to the next one. The bar workers are not mind readers they don't know who is going to start trouble. Their our still lots of people who just want to go to have fun.

What really happened: Two dexter men, ages 21 and 19** were leaving Necto after celebrating the 21 year old's birthday. Walking into the structure to drive home the 21 year old allegedly said, "Hi" while walking by the 3 to 4 Jackson men. To which they responded and got up in his face- a bunch of hooligans looking to start a fight. The 19 year old politely asked them to stop because his friend was fairly drunk and just wanted to get him home safe. One of the Jackson men then proceeded to punch the 21 year old in the face and when he turned around the man punched him in the back of the head and he went down. After a minute of them brutally kicking and punching the 21 year old, the 19 year old got in the middle trying to pull them off of his friend. At this point the men turned their attention to the 19 year old and started brutally beating him too. After a minute or so they jumped in their Pontiac and went to flee. The 19 year old ran down to the cashier's booth and told them to stop letting cars out. Then he flagged down a police officer and they found the car and apprehended the suspects.

Republic Parking uses the AAPD to fix problems (fights) resulting from their unwillingness to adequately staff the cashier booths in their structures.

I dont work there, but I do have extensive information on the company and their practices. Yes, those pay machines are intended to take jobs plain and simple.

It would be interesting to find out how many cashier booths were open for the 2AM rush. That structure has 4 booths. The longer people stay in that structure the more likely trouble will happen. If only 2 booths were open they were operating at 50% capacity which equals longer lines which equals more people are in the structure longer when increases the chances bad things will happen. AnnArbor.com should ask the AAPD how many times they have had to go to a structure operated by RPS and ordered the gates to be raised because of "riot" like situations in the structure. Republic Parking is only interested in getting customers in the structures; they dont care how long it takes you to get out

Speaking of the AAPD substation: Why are there never police in the substation for more than a few minutes? Considering the repeated types of crimes recently perpetrated in this particular area (i.e., fight on Liberty and Maynard where woman allegedly pushed against car; assaults in parking structure, etc.etc.), wouldn't it be a good idea to have an officer actually assigned to the substation late night/early morning when this stuff happens? Would it be too much of a bother for the assigned officer to walk around the area during the apparent trouble hours?

Welcome to Ann Arbor. Watch your back if you're out after midnight. Sad. I hope these men will heal from their wounds and the three offenders will get the right judge.

It sounds like all of the people (except 1) involved in this incident are under 21. Maybe bars shouldn't allow kids into their facilities. I'm pretty sure some of them got alcohol some now some way.

War won't be over until the Prince of Peace comes back to earth to rule for 1,000 years. We are inherently evil, NOT inherently good (Romans 3:23). The original Christmas present is eternal life through Jesus Christ (Romans 6:23).

Isn't there a police substation on the ground level of this parking structure. I think I have seen surveillance cameras there, too, in the structure levels and at ground level.

People love to blame the Necto for these things, but I see in the article that it happened on the sidewalk, and that the Necto staff called the police, you can't blame the Necto for violent idiots being downtown. Since my job has me downtown at late hours after places like Necto close, I can speak from experience that all the Ann Arbor bars have trouble. This year I have seen fights at or spilling out of Bar Louie, Necto, Scorekeepers, 8Ball, Ricks, and Blue Lepruchan. Necto probably makes it in the news the most since they have the highest capacity, therefore, the most potential idiots.

They've been having street brawls at Liberty and Maynard since it was Second Chance in the 70's, must just be something about that corner that makes people want to fight.
