Nothing says July 4th in Western Washtenaw County quite like the American Legion Post 31 chicken broil at Cavanaugh Lake in Sylvan Township.

"This year is the best chicken ever," said Paul Zahn of Chelsea. "And, I've been coming here a long, long time, so long, I've lost track."

Sales were brisk before noon at the chicken broil as Delores Fouty and Maria Stampish, Kim Denton, Helen Collins and Mamie Rush prepared the to go boxes with chicken, a roll, butter, coleslaw, baked beans and dessert.

Volunteers broil about 600 chicken halves for the event every year, using more than 800 pounds of charcoal.

Among the most important jobs is that of chicken flipper. Care is needed to keep chickens from falling into the pit.

"We don't want dirty chicken," said Craig Maier, a post member.

So, you like diners? Speaking of unsanitary, try eating at the Fleetwood Diner. I'd eat at this chicken broil without hesitation, but I wouldn't get within twenty feet of the Fleetwood, thank you very much.

The top photo is not very appetizing...How unsanitary for this man to not cover up his long hair! I am so glad I am a vegetarian!

Serously? Good grief we have survived quite nicely since the hairy cave man. Go ahead and enjoy your organic granola!
