There’s a lot of activity at Glacier Hills these days. That message was clear this weekend from our radio show guest Michelle Mitchell, the Memory Care program manager at Glacier Hills.

Glacier Hills is presently undergoing a large-scale expansion project. They are constructing a new state-of-the-art rehabilitation facility that will be connected to the rest of the campus with an underground tunnel.

The new building will be used exclusively for their short-term rehab patients and should be complete in about two years. The current Care and Rehabilitation Center will be renovated to better focus on those needing long-term memory care and on assisted living.

Michelle talked about how important it is to make their residents feel at home. The objective is creating an environment that feels like home while still providing the skilled care their residents may require.

Michelle is clearly passionate about her job. She facilitates a support group for family members that have loved ones with Alzheimer’s disease. This group meets at the Glacier Hills Care and Rehabilitation Center the first Thursday of every month, at 2 p.m. Michelle knows some folks are hesitant to join a support group. She really encourages people to come just once, and she thinks you’ll keep coming back.

Jen Eyer was our next guest. Jen is the director of audience engagement at AnnArbor.com. This business venture, now almost two years old, is going really well. With Jen’s sincere enthusiasm for her job, it would be hard to believe otherwise.

AnnArbor.com is finding an audience online, with growing numbers of people actively engaged with the website. Additionally, the circulation numbers for the twice-a-week print publication have held steady. The quality of their product was recently validated, winning 13 awards from the Associated Press.

The website is also reaching the senior population. One of the fastest growing online demographics is those over 60.

For seniors wanting to connect with AnnArbor.com, Jen recommends signing up for the daily e-newsletter. You’ll receive an e-mail every morning with all the headlines. You can click on the articles of interest to you and read the whole story. To sign up for the newsletter, go to AnnArbor.com, and click on “Get headlines by e-mail” in the upper right.

Jen’s organization will conduct outreach programs later this year, visiting community groups including seniors. They want to share all that is happening at AnnArbor.com and their plans for the future, as well as receive local feedback.

Being local is a big part of AnnArbor.com. Jen says, “People want a deep, rich source of local news, and that’s where we’re putting most of our effort.”
