6-story Jesus statue on I-75 in Ohio destroyed by lightning and fire
According to the AP article, the 62-foot tall "King of Kings" statue, nicknamed "Touchdown Jesus" because of its raised arms, was built in 2004 by the 4,000-member Solid Rock Church in Monroe, Ohio. It was made of styrofoam and fiberglass over a steel frame, which is all that remained today.
The AP noted the nondenominational church was founded by former horse trader Lawrence Bishop and his wife, who said he was trying to help people, not impress them, with the statue. They spent about $250,000 on the statue, intended as a beacon of hope and salvation, according to the article.
The statue's nickname is not to be confused with the mural also nicknamed "Touchdown Jesus" on the Hesburgh Library outside the stadium at University of Notre Dame. Positioned beyond the end zone, the mosaic by Milliard Sheets mirrors the raised arms of a referee signifying a touchdown.
