Many programs are available, like the tutoring assistance at the Ann Arbor District Library (343 S. Fifth Ave., Ann Arbor) for school-aged children in kindergarten through adult and provided by University of Michigan students. The free program allows students with library cards to participate in online homework help or in-person tutoring. Students in elementary, middle and high school can get assistance with multiple subjects including advanced placement subjects. Check out more at aadl.org/homework or call 734-327-4200.
To encourage reading, the Ypsilanti District Library has a Kids Only Book Club (229 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti) for youth in grades three through five. the kids meet monthly for snacks and discussion about books selected just for them. To register call 734-482-4110 ext. 1390.
Youth who may be challenged by reading in front of others should also consider reading to Logan the Ypsilanti District Library dog at the YDL Michigan Ave. Branch (229 W. Michigan Ave., Ypsilanti). Reading aloud to a dog can make your child become a better reader and instill confidence. Youth can sign up for monthly 10-minute reading slots with Logan. For more information, call 734-482-4110 ext. 1390.
Of course the earlier children begin reading or spend time being read to; the easier it is to get them to read later. For that, there are many great Ann Arbor area storytime locations including ones at area businesses like Barnes and Noble, Tree Town Toys, Kerrytown Market & Shops, and at the Arborland Borders, Waters Place Borders or downtown Ann Arbor Borders. Parents should also look to their local library for many great story time programs that may also be segmented for various ages.
