Crayon Fall Leaf

FALL~ My favorite time of year! I know spring is the time when a lot of people get really excited to clean and organize and are motivated for numerous things. Fall is my time, and I have been extremely motivated for art!

Now that school has begun and my schedule is staying consistent, my daughter and I have been doing many art projects. It is such a joy to fill a whole afternoon starting and completing a project. A couple of weeks ago we competed these crayon leaves.

Making Crayon Shavings

This is a very simple craft even for young children. First, you want to draw a large leaf on paper and cut out the inside and the outside. You will need two leaves that are the same for one project.

I just cut numerous leaves in a variety of colors so they could choose what colors the leaf should be. Have your child glue one leaf to a large piece of wax paper. Make wax paper large enough to fold once over leaf.

Ironing Wax paper

Now is the fun part. Your child can choose any color of crayon and sharpen it right over the wax paper. Spread the pile out one the wax paper where the middle of the leaf is. Fold wax paper over pile. This is where you Ohhhh and Ahhhhh! Iron over top of the wax paper and see the crayon shavings melt. This happens very fast!

Cut excess wax paper

Have your child glue on the matching top leaf and adult can cut the excess paper. We used glitter glue to make stems on the leaf then hung them in our window. They glow very brilliantly when the sun shines. Enjoy! And I hope to see leaves hanging in windows around town!

This project sounds beautiful and like so much fun. I described it to Stephanie and she can't wait to try it when Forrest gets home from school. Thanks so much for the idea, we will let you know how it turns out.
