Zingerman's Delicatessen: A Love Story

By John Moors

So money and they know it, baby. It’s worth it to make a visit and pay $14 for a sandwich every now and then because everything is made in house and made incredibly well.

I'll bet you thought I was dead or something after not posting on AnnArbor.com in several months, didn't you? Thought I had eaten one too many gigantic sandwiches and finally croaked? The truth is I am alive and well, and so is my blood pressure. I was missing in action for so long because I was forced to discontinue my Internet, sell my car, and begin eating grilled cheese sandwiches for every meal.

Why, you ask?

Well, I decided I wanted to eat at Zingerman's Delicatessen. That's why.

I didn't want to just eat at Zingerman's. Not just a sandwich and a small order of potato salad. I wanted a serious sample of most of Zingerman's extremely high-priced offerings that I could afford. I was going to break the bank. Savings (what savings?) be damned.

Usually when I’m talking to someone about food in Ann Arbor, whether they live in the area or not, Zingerman’s will come up in the conversation. It’s somewhat of the food landmark of Ann Arbor. Regardless of the fact that most people have to take out a second mortgage on their home to eat there, the deli is serving pretty ridiculously good food. It’s worth it to make a visit and pay $14 for a sandwich every now and then because everything is made in house and made incredibly well. They don’t take any shortcuts at this place. The bread is baked at Zingerman’s bakery, most of the cheese is made at their creamery, all of the sauces/toppings/condiments are made in house, and most of the ingredients are locally produced. They really produce some special things here and it’s a treat every time I visit.

On a side note, bacon is treated like an art at Zingerman’s Deli. They normally have 5-8 varieties at any given time. Beautiful.

Enough of the talk, what I really want to show you is what my small fortune will get you at Zingerman’s Delicatessen. Remember, this may be expensive but an occasional visit is worth every penny. Seriously, I would like to write up a full review but you’re just going to have to trust me that everything tastes just as good as it looks. If you're an Ann Arbor resident and appreciate good food, you know this by now. If not, something is wrong with you.

Wait, you forgot to go Next Door and get dessert and coffee... redo! I particularly recommend hummingbird cake.

Couldn't agree more, John. Zingerman's always serves up fresh, fresh, fresh with the greatest ingredients. I've also loved their sandwiches of the month, which are always fun to try.
