Meet John Roos, coffee blogger

By John Roos

DSC07694.JPG
John Roos, citizen, promoter and coffee seller, was born in Ann Arbor sometime when hash bash was still cool. Speaking of which, people often think he’s stoned, because he’ll actually listen to people … but in fact all of that love is just stone cold Roos (with maybe some caffeine thrown in for good measure). As a reformed ski bum, poet, artist, consultant chef, and Subaru salesman, he’s learned how to relate through many languages, cultures, and tastes all over the globe. His time spent in kitchens has also helped develop his palate. Though he never achieved his dad’s dream of celebrity-chef stardom, since 2005 he’s used his skills to develop Roos into Roos Roast Free Speech Coffee.

Though he doesn’t like board games, he’s constantly experimenting and tinkering with puzzles of wheel and steam-centric machinery (including his “lever pull” Nuova Simonelli 2 group espresso machine riding on a converted hot dog cart that’s powered by solar, propane and a motorcycle battery).

John was recently married to Katharine Weider, coffee-lover and director of U-M School of Art and Design’s PLAY Gallery, and lives near Lower Town in Ann Arbor. You can find his coffee in various Ann Arbor outposts, including the Ann Arbor Farmer’s Market where you can say “hi” to the roaster himself. Check him on the web at www.roosroast.com

I think you should also have your Mom contribute to this column, she is a blast.

@Daniel: Patrick is right. I would experiment with the grind and make a disaster out of your kitchen while you over caffeinate playing around with the settings on your burr grinder. Chase the butter fly! Have you tried a single origin in your Mocha-Pot? Many times less is more! Thank you for the comments

@DanielF: Are you sure it isn't just a problem with how you've ground the coffee? They're pretty sensitive to that.

I love his coffees, but, he needs to develop a blend that works well in a moka-pot.
