"Answer This!"—the feature-length indie movie both set and shot at the University of Michigan—has reached a deal for a limited regional release in movie theaters starting next month.

Expanded national distribution could follow, and a DVD/video on demand release is scheduled for next year.

Despite all the major movies shot in the area in recent years, "Answer This!" is notable in a number of ways: Writer/director Christopher Farah and producer Michael Farah are Ann Arbor natives with successful Hollywood resumes; the movie was not only filmed here, it's also set here (most of the other locally shot features have seen our area stand in for other locales); and it's the first time the University of Michigan has permitted filming on its campus, identified as such, for a fictional movie. In addition, a special Ann Arbor event is planned to celebrate the release.

"I can't believe that we started out here in Ann Arbor with a lot of hard work, help from our friends and the community, and a lot of dreams—and now we've got a shot not only at a Midwest release, but if we do really well here, at a national theatrical release as well. It's been an amazing journey, and in a way it's just beginning," Chris Farah wrote in an email to AnnArbor.com today.

The movie has been acquired by Wrekin Hill Entertainment and NECA Films. A special red-carpet charity premiere is slated Oct. 13 at the new Emagine Theater in Royal Oak, sponsored by Variety, the Children’s Charity, and the anti-bullying movement Defeat The Label. The movie then opens in Novi, Grand Rapids and Traverse City.

"Answer This!" will open in Ann Arbor on Oct. 21 at the Michigan Theater, which hosted a sneak peek of the movie last fall. The movie will also have theatrical runs in Concord, N.H., and Cleveland.

“Answer This!” will be released on DVD and VOD next year by Lionsgate.

The movie stars Christopher Gorham (a costar of TV's “Covert Affairs”), Arielle Kebbel (“Vampire Diaries”), Chris Parnell (“30 Rock,” “Saturday Night Live") and Kip Pardue (“Remember the Titans”). Today's announcement describes it as "an authentic college story set at the University of Michigan about friends who would rather discuss women, drink beer and play pub trivia than figure out what to do with their lives."

“We’re incredibly excited to be working with Wrekin Hill and (co-founder) Chris Ball, whose team has so much experience getting classic indies out to the world,” Mike Farah said in the press release. “Our movie is an authentic college story with a true Middle-America aesthetic, so starting our theatrical release in the heartland is a great way for us to tap into our core audience as we branch outward.”

Michael Farah is president of production at the popular comedy website Funny Or Die. Chris Farah, who has collaborated with his brother on Funny Or Die videos, is a former journalist who contributed to The New York Times, Salon.com and Foreign Affairs Magazine.

The Funny or Die connection provides the theme for the celebration in Ann Arbor. Chris Farah said the Michigan Theater will host a special "Night with Funny Or Die" at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23.

"Before our movie, we'll feature exclusive never-before-seen clips from the celebrity comedy website, and we'll also be joined by Chris Parnell" for a Q and A session, Chris Farah said.

“The Farah brothers are incredible talents and we at Wrekin Hill are delighted to be working with them,” Ball said.
